Default My Radiator/shroud build step by step

Fans came in today so i will be finishing up and istalling this weekend
Radiator-Godspeed from GB
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13882
Fans from ebay or from Street Rod World, 10" 1500CFM each
https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15098
And a home made lexan shroud.

total thickness is approximately 6.5-7" total

ill post pics of how i seal the shroud
i will run the fans in parallel, they will come on same way as the stock fan but i do plan on running a thermal switch at 185* or 190* sometime in the spring along with a 180* thermostat from NAPA
go ahead and hate on it but please also feel free to contribute any positive ideas on how to make it better or what i could use to seal it off, i was thinking automotive foam strip with the sticky side to the shroud, it is rated at 180* but i think it should be ok since the shroud will not get that hot (i hope)
thanks for your input

You are going to cut holes in that lexan for the fans right?

Aren't you going to loose all that area of the radiator that won't see flow from speed?

Honestly man I think you should make a frame and then shroud it form the rear if at all.

You are pissing away a lot of area that would have been fed from driving and when the fans are off it will be more resistance than you want to pass the free air through there.

Not to mention the flow that will no longer be there to help control under hood temps, when the fans are off. Keep in mind the fans are there to help move air not to be the only means of moving air through it.

My opinion is that you will be choking it and removing any gains you are netting with the new radiator.

yes. cause once airflow hits a solid wall it ceases to exist anymore. there's no way it would find the lower pressure zone and make it's way out. none at all. correct-a-mundo.

Looking forward to your "sealing" solution. Still think the magical black plastic from BSR is ideal for this kind of stuff. I just rebuilt the bottom section of mouth shroud last weekend to expose the lower section of my rad to oncoming air flow.

no way man, lexan moves air through itself way faster than any other median it actually accelarates it

i do have something in mind on directing airflow, no time to address it now, still need to get some damn boost up in that biyatch otherwise all this **** is pointless, lol
but i want to build a splitter undertray combo out of ABS if i can ever find it reasonably priced...keep in mind that i do not have a stock bumper, so my opening is much bigger and it is as wide as the radiator
here is the best example i have...

Dan your right on. Since your not having the lexan right on the face of the rad your effectively increasing the area that the fans effect (if you seal it off)

right, thats what i was thinking...the shroud will be completely sealed and appx 1" rfom radiator surface, i figured that should allow for adequate flow even when fans are off

all the major co. are doing it this way, sort of...

also, since i plan on running the fans around 190* with a 180* thermostat once i get my hands on a thermal switch, the fans will rarely be off under hard driving anyways, no?

again, im not expert, i just did what everyone seems to be doing, only cheaper, lol
copy at your own risk, lol

Thats all true.....but if you could push the shroud out farther and angle it to the edges you would have a much better shot with the flow. In your current config you are creating pockets in the corners that will most likely create small vacuums and not move any air. I need to draw up my thoughts to illustrate it but I am at work so no time.

Yeah but your going for that last X% of cooling that isn't needed. The new rad is overkill anyways and his setup saves space. Ideally it would be a venturi blah blah blah.

PS if there are vaccuums the air wont be stagnate. Yes there might some less airflow at a standstill in those corners than there would be if the fan covered the entire face of the rad.

I wasn't saying you're doing anything wrong- it's all right, just that the abs is (IMO) easier since you can bend it like sheet metal, but it's way easier to work with. I thought that'd be an easier solution when it comes to sealing up the sides of the lexan. But it doesn't matter how you do it, as long as you block the air. I built my first shroud with sheet metal- but the orientation to the rad was nearly identical, I used two 12" fans and it worked great.

swaybar bling? the color? that's whatever zinc plating addco puts on all their bars.

At what speed does airflow from the car moving overcome the fans?
