Looks like the cheapie digi-video cams have come way up in quality. My pal built this for his E30 track car. Video looks great, and no moving parts. I've lost two camcorders to in-car video setups just from vibration (no impacts).

a little on the expensive side, but all my racingh buddies use the I/O mount, has a poly bushing, no one had complained for far, videos always look great and stable.

I use the IOport mount also, works great. I use a normal small digicam with a wideangle and it takes quite acceptable footage. My only complaint is onboard mics suck... a clean audio input would be nice.

but mine does have a good bit a vibration and shock, so the idea of the top brace to support the camera is very interesting.

 

I've used the bushing type mounts and IMO solid mount works better with cams that have stabilization. Thought maybe it was the camera trying to manage the shock of the bump and the reaction of the bushing to the bump. Solid mount made for the cost of a muffler clamp and some scrap. Either way, both shook my vid cams to death after a few years (hi8 & dig). I've also used a similar tripod head setup.

I ran a mic under-hood back when showroom stock required a full OE exhaust just so I could hear my throttle inputs.

yeah- but you might want to wrap something around the brace first to keep it from damaging the cover/surface

 

I took 2 exhaust clamps, some spare metal I had laying around, and bought a $30 tripod head. Pretty solid for less than $35, and the tripod head has a quick release too. http://faditara.smugmug.com/gallery/1328958#62658684. I do use a strap for track days to keep secured.

$35! that's outrageous- mine was $3. Actually that's an excellent "no weld" arrangement. I thought the view would suck from the brace, but it's quite nice. I call "cold tires!"
