Default Charcoal canister question

I'm in the middle of redoing my greddy setup, last night I noticed the line that runs off the bottom of the canister has a plastic nipple broken off into it and was hanging freely.

What's this line do? does it vent to atmosphere or route into the intake manifold.

its a vacuum line. you just have yourself a vacuum leak right now....when you hook it back up, make sure to put a check valve on the line so boost does not enter the canister.

So it goes into the intake manifold, correct?

rip out the canister and loop the lines.

Yea, I would just kiss it goodbye and throw it in a bag somewhere in case you need it for emissions.

i removed it,but left the vacum lines.i clogged the leaking one with a bolt.
i didnt get a check engine light.i read some do some dont.probally just ob2 cars.

But is it necessary at all. I would like to scrap it but was told it's necessary to remove gas vapor from the system under vacuum. Totally in the dark otherwise on this one. Or is it just for emmisions?

just emmisions. Ive heard accounts of some people smelling gas vapors in boost without it however...

Gotchya. So it's just an active charcoal filter? Wouldn't the filter need to be replaced after some duration? After 15 years, is it still doing anything at all?

I hate seeing it under there so I'm thinking I'll take it all out, make sure I can put it back if i want but eh, worth a try. Weight is weight I suppose no matter how minimal.

Its part of the evaporative emissions system, shouldn't throw a code on OBDI cars. You might fail emissions for high HC counts though, but dont quote me on that one. Emissions class is kinda a blur to me now lol.

It shouldnt pull a CEL unless you unplug it or don't hook it up to your exhaust, and then its only some cars it seems. The whole EGR system is a big pain and eyesore IMO. Certainly glad I was able to get rid of all of it.

Any instructions on taking the thing out, about the lines etc ?
I've plans to take out my AC & PS this month, I may as well take that silly thing out as well.

Hello BenR, to answer your question, I took a look at my parts car last night and found that 3rd line that routes off the bottom of cannister is routed to the front subframe and vents to atmosphere. This is designed to supply fresh air to the system. Apparently 1.8 cars do not have this line as they get the fresh air from the grid on top of the canister.

Actually, we do have them. <G> My car has the vac line going in off the intake manifold, a second line going out through the top.... which I believe goes down to a hard line, which then connects to a rubber hose, which is supposed to be attached to the subframe (goes internal to vent to atmospher). Although, I'm doing this completely from memory, since the car's at home in storage.... (I know I have the line to the subframe, since I had to tie it up out of the way. <G>)

Maybe it's the ODB-II cars?
