To quote myself from the exact same post in which you selectively quoted me saying that the "manage attachment" button wasn't significantly better than the new applet:

In a perfect universe, the https://www.miataturbo.net/mt2011/im...sertimage.gif? button would go back to the old popup into which you can quickly paste a link and be done with it. And a new system would be devised which merges the functionality of the existing https://i.imgur.com/2oLCglF.gif? button with that of the new applet, giving users a quick and easy way to upload a file directly from their PC and insert it into the message, while also permitting attachments which have already been uploaded to be deleted.

I realize that's asking for a lot, and I'd be perfectly happy if the https://i.imgur.com/2oLCglF.gif? remained completely unchanged and the new applet simply died in a fire. I'm just allowing for the fact that some people might find the "upload from local" functionality of the new applet to be marginally more user-friendly than the way the existing https://i.imgur.com/2oLCglF.gif? screen works (even though it provides the same level of functionality.)

<p>I'm a good tester. Tend to break things by doing stuff that those skilled in the art might not attempt.</p>

Well, we could optimize this for :brain:, or we could exercise KISS and serve the vast majority of users better. Just sayin'.

I hate you guys for making me scroll left to right to read.

<p>On my portrait monitor this thread is hell. :eggplant:</p><p><span>@DNMakinson I use imgur. Sign up, upload pictures. My favorite bit is that when you go view all your pictures you can click on the &quot;view image info&quot; drop-down and change to Generate image links. Then you select everything you want. Pick your format (I use Linked BBCode, so it auto-generates the [IMG] tags for me. Then choose your size (so I don't have huge pictures) and then copy what is generated.</span></p><p><span>Works great for my build thread. For posting random pictures from online the applet sucks. But I barely use it because of how Imgur does stuff.</span></p>

DNMakinson 07-14-2015 08:39 PM

<p>But I understand that imgur drops pics after a time. I don't want my build thread to end up with broken links after a while. Now if the forum pics them up and re-hosts them, then I wouldn't mind going that route.</p>

I've used a number of free image hosts over the years. Imageshack, Picoodle, Geocities, Imgur, Kodak...

Thus far, Imgur is the only one that hasn't completely fucked me over by deleting my old pictures, closing abruptly, disallowing hotlinks, or suddenly throttling my bandwidth quota to nothing and not even allowing me to download my old images unless I pay them.

I fully expect that to change, however. Free third-party image hosts simply cannot be trusted. I've lost way too much work and too many "howto" drawings...

It does. It has for quite a while. It's free, it's automatic, and we won't delete your shit.

my post was relevant to this:

I'd rather you be able to drag and drop images directly into this window but you cant. I'd also like to be able to poo from my chair right now without getting up. But none of that matters.

You said CURRENTLY the [MA] button is better than the applet. I disagree:

you have to first click "go advanced", then "manage attachments", then click upload for each individual file. You can only upload 5. Then you have to click "upload".

If you want to then display the images inline to your post, you need to then right click on each image get the new image url, and paste each link in the text area and surround them with [img] tags.

with the applet, you can click the image icon from the quick reply box. Click "browse my device" and select all the images you want to attach at once. It displays the images youve attached, gives you an area to attach text to each one and adjust the display order. Then when you click "insert" it inserts the images into the text formatted corrected for display.

That's MUCH better. sorry, but it is.

Oh wait, I'm sorry, I actually argued your point, sorry.

In a perfect world I'd like to ride an attack turtle down the streets of Arlington. Therefore you on wrong to suggest thehe new applet is not significantly better for multiple files than the [MA] button.

So you know what's coming next:

My question is why are we trying to make old VB bulletin software work with new shit? Why not upgrade to the newest version like any other forum does? Legacy software adapted to new software is fucking infuriating a la my label printer that has drivers and software that barely work in windows 7 unless you offer a goat sacrifice to the printer gods.

Because IB hosts thousands of forums and doing a mass upgrade is an easy way to break them all.

Braineack 07-16-2015 08:23 AM

fuck all other forums.

Guinea pigs, while moronic, are undeniably cute.

That said, I don't think there's any need to pop a gasket about the forum software in general. Frankly I'm glad that we're not having to be a beta tester VB5. We're on release 3.8.7, and it works pretty damned well. I can absolutely guarantee that if we were to upgrade to 5.0, you guys would be bitching and screaming worse than if the ownership of cats as pets in the US were outlawed.

90% of the changes which have been made to this forums config over the past few years have been huge positives. Occasionally, something retarded gets implemented, and the new image uploader app is an example of that. But comparing that to a legacy printer driver is just retarded.

For the record, I have a 10 year old Panduit label printer with a parallel port on it, and not only does it work just fine under Win7, I have it shared across the domain here at work so that everyone can print to it directly out of WireCAD.
