Parllel port. What's that?

We have a wireless brother label printer that works... like a printer. The software is lame, but it does its job.

I haven't tried Brother but HP has the worst, most bloated software to conduct a simple printing operation I have ever dealt with. The UI sucks and it is constantly robbing resources from the CPU and internet bandwidth. I don't know if it is selling all of my files to the Chinese or what, but it won't let you stop whatever it is communicating.

Datamax I-4208 label printer.

Their software is shit.

*edit* I wasn't so much throwing a hissy fit, as stating a point. It honestly doesn't bug me since Imgur gives you the bbcode ready to copy and paste.

I absolutely love the Brother P-Touch Editor software. It's got a very clean, simple interface with a WYSIWYG interface. I'm slightly annoyed by how much label stock the P-touch machines typically waste in between prints, but the software lets you work around that when connected to a PC; if you're printing a number of labels, even manually one at a time, you can tell the printer not to advance and cut the previous one until after you've sent the next one.

The printer I have now is a portable unit with a full QWERTY keyboard, and is shared among the department. I've been thinking of getting one of these just for myself to leave on my desk.

Brother PT-P700 PC-Connectable Label Printer for PC and Mac

As a bonus, it's far more compact than what I use now (barely larger than the label cartridge) yet still compatible with all of our existing label stock.

Incidentally, this is not the parallel-port printer I was referring to earlier. That one prints self-laminating cable labels that come on a large roll, using film-transfer printing from a separate ribbon. Basically the very old version of this:

The Brother P-touch is one I use for labeling equipment, patchbays, etc.

We have this guy:

Works great. Wifi printing makes it super easy to share. You can even print silly little pictures or draw your own and paste them into the software.

like so (.47 inch wide label):

What is the largest size label those can print to? The thing I love about the Datamax is you can print a 5" wide label and it has really high resolution due to being a thermal ink ribbon printer.

Plus it can pump out labels extremely fast. Although, the quality difference is made apparent by its $2k retail price tag.

Those Brother printers are slick looking though.

The TZe label stock comes as wide as 0.94"

These printers are for sticking labels on patch bays, ID tags on equipment, that sort of thing. If you need 5" wide labels, they're not for you.

Unless the other dimension is .94"...

I use the brother for prototype labeling and such. I can mostly mimic our production labeling with the software INCLUDING various formats of barcode-- which it can automagically generate given an alphanumeric string.

Or .23", or .35", or .47", or .70". The thinner stuff in particular is awesome for labeling things like RJ-45 panels, 110 blocks, etc., where they only give you a very skinny place to label them. The P-Touch editor software has a nice feature where you tell it the overall width of the label and the number of spaces you want it divided into, and it automagically creates a frame template for you. Great for connector panels.

I also use the skinny stuff to label the programmable buttons on audio consoles, video switchers, etc. It's super-durable.

They also have a 1.4" wide label stock that's only compatible with some of the printers, but that stuff is awesome for sticking large labels on the tops of racks to identify them by number. This is especially helpful in a facility in which we have over 400 racks.

<p>I will agree that the new image uploader is slower for a single image and we should have improvements coming to replicate the old experience where you would just paste a single URL and go. At some point we would love to have the&nbsp;uploader handle attachment files (docx, pdf, etc.) and avoid having several different ways to accomplish the same thing - presuming we can get the single solution working better.&nbsp;</p><p>MT is the best site at giving feedback and you guys may get a lot of the newer features that are still in early phases sooner than most communities. We fear change.

Any forum which is not indistinguishable from a 1980s era BBS is bad.

I miss MS-DOS. And WordPerfect 5.0 (press "Reveal Codes" and see everything that's going on in your document). Sigh.

That looks far more advanced than when I started using BBS' in '97. How did they get colour?!

Oh... 2004.

ANSI graphics with color were commonplace in the 80s. That particular screenshot is from CNET BBS which ran in the Amiga, but PCs with CGA or better also supported 80x25 with color under ANSI.SYS on a variety of BBS platforms such as Wildcat, WWIV, Major, Searchlight, etc.
