What about having less rules? Apparently nobody reads the original email with the rules, so why not just shorten it to say something like:
Welcome to the forum. We have 3 rules and they are enforced rigorously. 1. Search before you ask a question; chances are it has been asked (and answered) before. 2. Read the stickies; they are kept at the beginning of the section because they contain such useful information. 3. Put your location in your profile, and basics on your car in your signature. It's short and sweet, and then you could make the same thing pop up whenever they hit the New Thread button with less than 10 posts or something. Giving the new guys more to do before they can post will drive them away, and ignoring them will probably just make the situation worse. Just my $.02 Edit: Sorry if this is a dead thread, I just realized how long ago the last post was. Although, I do think ignoring a stupid post is a good idea. Silence can speak volumes. As a newb, I come to this site more often than any other site. The information is of the highest quality, and the humor is entertaining. My wife is always pissed at me for spending so much time reading all this great info. But I came here only having a basic knowledge of cars... now I'm gathering parts for what will hopefully be a great DIY build. I couldn't have done it without all the experience knowledge here. When I venture to other Miata sites I am almost immediately bored, and return quickly. Everyone knows the difference between a funny or sarcastic push in the right direction, or an overly harsh even hateful response. "Nude pixs of GF or ban" is great, as is "read the stickys and FAQ's you retard". Then there is the drift kids post mentioned earlier, I felt bad for him. His response was admirable, how many of us would have responded that way under that kind of fire. I know, I've used my allotment of words for the year. I'll go back to lurking now. Cliff notes: Good arguments to both sides, meet in the middle. :2cents: |
Also there are the typical members who just hunt for noobs and all they do is... "use the search tool", kind of a competition of who is the first one to execute the classic reply and make themselves feel more part of the club.

I think hazing newbs is fine. I've only been here a bit but i've seen hazing do it's job often. Usually goes:
-newb post -haze -haze, and this is why -point in right direction -newb apology -accepted, welcome Problem solved. |

Actually, on second thought - maybe you should just leave this forum and never come back. |

In all fairness, this thread was still on the first page of the front desk section. Threads there don't disappear into the depths quite as fast as in other sections. I have caught myself about to reply to an old thread once or twice because I assumed it was new for being on the front page.

Please use the search tool, thats the typical reply from wannabe locals :loser:
Just because someone has a small amount of postings does not mean that person has never been on a forum or does not know how it works. I have used the search tool and nothing shows up, then I open a thread with the question and next thing, "Please use the search tool", my reply is I did use it and the person has to just shove there tongue up there butt as he/she has just looked like a jackass. The so called local miataturbo user does not even reply back with useful links to prove the search tool was the best option. :jerkit: |

:laugh: damn you lazy asses, every noob clearly uses the search function with no success. You should really take time out of your days to post a detailed response to a question that was already asked the week or month prior, because they couldn't find it. If you search and can't find it, be prepared for either a) catching shit from the "locals", b) get told to use the search feature, or, c) the almighty ban hammer. Thats the way forums work. Don't like it, go away.

You know, it actually takes effort to be a hater and to abuse newbs. Save the world and expend less energy by ignoring posts that get on your nerves and do something worthwhile with your time.
Like most on here I get frustrated when questions are repeated over and over again, mainly because I've taken time out to read a thread that has effectively wasted my time. What I won't do is waste more time rising to the bait, so I find another thread or another site - simple. That said, I do find the banter amusing even though I choose not to participate. I guess it's down to the kind of person that you are. Do you prey on the weak (in a manner of speaking) or are you a helper or, as most parents do, allow others to find their way. Regardless, this is agreat site. |
it's one thing to parent your own kid and watch them learn not to repeat mistakes.
it's another thing when you're the foster parent of a continuous string of imbeciles. |

it's another thing when you're the foster parent of a continuous string of imbeciles. I liken it to poor drivers on the road. I constantly try and educate other drivers by letting them know I didn't appreciate them changing lanes without a blinker when I was traveling 10mph faster than they are know doing 20ft in front of me etc. My wife always says: "Your not going to change to world like that." She tells me she knows I'm a better drive and that I actually understand the rules of the road, but that there's no way I'm going to educate all the idiots. We should just let it go. Every asshat ends up meeting another asshat down the road. They have accidents, and are inconvenienced for their asshattery. Cliffs: Don't let it crinkle your bumper. |
