And there you go: the shortest, cleanest VVT turbo oil supply in the Miata world. Contrary to the perspective in this picture, my SS braided line doesn't hit anything.

The 90° bend just so clears the hardline.

After tapping clean the threads with cotton busd and brake cleaner, while pushing a finger into the big hole where the filter sat in and covering the orifice going to the VVT actuator. Then mount the adapter fitting (use Teflon tape).

There are two options for the fitting: the one (90°) on the left "might" be able to run underneath the VVT hardline, but I didn't want to take any chances of having it collide with the hardline. It's better to use that one when tapping into the rear end of the VVT system. The fitting to the right allows the oil supply to just clear the hardline.

However since the overall depth of the port is only slightly thicker than 1/2", the threads are similar enough to run a tap into it and make an 1/8" NPT to -4AN fitting fit.

The plug is a 1/8" BSPT. However, most hydraulic threads found in cars are either AN threads or NPT. We'll tap for the latter. Due to the fact that some dude once dropped some other dude's tea into the ocean, NPT is very similar to BSPT, but not the same. BSPT has 28 threads per inch, whereas NPT has 27.

Remove teh plug with a hew wrench. You'll notice there's a port, so no drilling required.

The orifice on top lets oil flow into the VVT actuator. On the opposite side, plugged by the screw on the bottom of the picture, is where we will tap into.

You don't want any metal shavings make their way into the VVT actuator. Let me repeat: Absolutely NO metal shavings. So apply grease onto the tap, and remove the tap several times to clean out any shavings. Also be careful not to tap too far into the hole. NPTs are tapered in order to seal well. Tap too far, and your fitting might not seal. I think I tapped some 8mm into the hole. Regularly check with your fitting so that it almost completely goes in, but still has a thread or two left.

For obvious reasons, you will have to remove the VVT mechanism. After that, remove the small filter. Mazda didn't put an extra filter in there just for fun - the VVT mechanism is extremely sensitive to dirt.
