So that's 77 games for ~$100.

As a non-PC gamer, I don't understand those maths. :) How is your steam account worth over a grand but you only spent $100? Is that like saying you paid $100 for games that would have had an original MSRP of about $1,000?

How much have you spent on computer components, including video cards, memory, fans, etc?

My build was around $400 including all of those things. Re-used a case and power supply, bought new MOBO, CPU, GFX card and memory for sub 400. If i want to upgrade my system again to be faster than any "next-gen" console, it will only cost a new CPU and graphics card.. but i feel no need since there are no games out that require this of me yet.

FRT_Fun 06-11-2013 04:26 PM

Nowadays I use my computers mostly for work. My graphics card gets more use crunching numbers for any number of programs than it does for gaming. I think it will be refreshing to have a system dedicated to Netflix and Gaming without the want to always upgrade. That will be the PS4.

I haven't owned a TV in a year and a half, thats how long its been since my 360 has been plugged in. PCs do everything better besides social gaming, IE you intereact with other people who are physically in your living room while playing games. And consoles seem to be trying to kill split screen so even thats going away. I keep the 360 around in case I ever get a tv so that I could maybe play madden or guitar hero with people over. I might end up getting a used wii or game cube to be able to host drunken mario kart/party, but thats about it.

I basically only buy games on steam now. Heck I've re-bought games on steam that I own on disk because 95% of my CD/DVD/Floppy drive based games sit at my parents house an hour away because I dont have place to store them all.

Another good one, then I'm done with the xbox circlejerk pics.

And I thought it was bad enough that they still charged for xbox live.

Any idea on how long ago the build before that was and how much it cost?

I will have to confirm the hard drive size the next time I have it on, but I want to say I paid ~$300 in 2007. I'll have to go double check, but I want to say I got my shitty Dell PC for about $700 in 2006.

That would put my 5-year hardware costs at $0.

I typically pay $20 - $40 per game because I either buy used or wait for a deal to stock up (the last time was when Target ran a "Buy 2, get 1 free" type deal). It's also not unusual for me to play (and re-play) something like Mass Effect or Oblivion for 6 - 12 months.

I never buy on release date and I do zero multi-player gaming so I am probably atypical for this thread.

The idea of computer gaming definitely appeals to me in terms of things like bug patches and development mods for games like Skyrim, but I don't want to spend time researching new components and hot-rodding my desktop (and trouble shooting accompanying failures). It was my past experience that every time I wanted a new game, I would need a new video card or more RAM and I was over it.

Granted, the last PC game I bought was Guild Wars... :noob:

This thread isn't about PC vs Console. It's about how shitty ex-box is. Plz don't make me ban you.

In all seriousness, tell me why - in real world application - I should care about the things you posted.

My 360 is always connected to my internet anytime it is powered on.

Is it your understanding that I must have a Kinect and the camera must be on at all times in order for me to play a game?

Let's talk about DRM. I think this is the potential hose for me because I buy 75% of my games used at heavily discounted prices vs original MSRP. Is your interpretation of currently available information that won't work in the future?

You could say the last "build" before that was in 2005 to play wow. It cost me nearly a grand, but I didn't build the computer myself. Hardware prices for computers have also come WAY down from that era, it's crazy the stuff you can get for cheap now days that will still do more than most people would ever have a need for.

I also work from home and my computer is my main source of income. So if we are calculating it out that way, my "system" i use to play games on was not only free, but it's put me in the black quite a bit.

dieselmiata 06-11-2013 05:25 PM

As I understand it, the Kinect sensor MUST always be plugged in, but it can be turned off. Why I see this as a turnoff (pun) is that I know how to hack into an xbox. If my dumbass can do it, people who actually know what they are doing can do a much better job hacking into and turning on a sensor that can see in the dark with facial recognition and monitor heart rates.

Not to mention the not so far fetched idea that if it detects multiple faces, it can charge you extra for movies and games. I can see netflix or Hulu adopting this tech to make money.

I really don't like cameras in my room staring at me for any reason.

Edit: I'd like to add that my belief is that much of the fear/hype about it is all magnified by the current NSA/datamining issue in the news. Microsoft's statements about the privacy concerns seem to mirror those put out by the Federal Government in regards to the phone monitoring, and we can see how that turned out. So with that fresh in mind, Microsoft is asking us to put a piece of hardware in our houses, connected to their server at least once a day with one of the most advanced camera's many have ever seen.

+1. The web cam on my laptop has a lens cover on/off switch, my old one didnt and it had a piece of tape over it.

Gaming. The last game I played was Forza, and that was probably over 6 months ago.

I did used to play Pardus a lot. But I got pretty bored with the whole skill grind/resource sink cycle and closed my account. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1370993405

The xbone needs to touch MS servers once every 24 hours. If not your games won't work. That means if you have an issue with the internet for over 24 hours (I've had it happen before) you can't play your games. That also means if MS servers go down for one reason or another, you can't play your games. Even though you may go 10 years without this ever being a problem, why should it exist as a possible failure point at all? Just so MS can git moar moniez.

Netflix and many other basic services are behind the xbox live paywall. Meaning you must pay for xbox live to get them. For the PS4 you only need a subscription ps+ for multiplayer.

Kinect is now a mandatory component of the system, which is required to be plugged in in order for the console to operate. Again, there is no GOOD reason for this to happen.

You can only give Xbox One games to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days. Each game can only be given once. Microsoft allows you to gift games to friends but they can't "borrow" them. This is more true to the PC games type model where on places like steam you can't really resell your games. Unfortuantely this is a huge part of owning console (the ability to trade/sell games) so it's not being taken kindly. Especially when the PS4 has stayed true to the original trade/sell model.

The Xbox One will use region-locking to lock games down geographically. The reason for this—on any of the many devices and media formats region-locking exists—remains shrouded in the fog of pointless ideas. PS4 is NOT region locked.

In reality the big thing is that the PS4 subscription service is cheaper, and the system is cheaper.

Supe 06-11-2013 08:32 PM

I've always been a PS fan. The games that have the most appeal to me are typically Sony-specific. Couple that with the PS3 being one of the best Blu Ray players on the market in its price range, and it was hard to top.

That being said, I've got massive wood just thinking about the PS4 release and being able to play the new Assassin's Creed on it.

If you are pirating all your software, then it's not a reasonable contest. It would be like comparing my clothes shopping bill to that of a shoplifter's.

I don't pirate, well anymore.

To break it down really simple.

I use steam.
I play a TON of free to play games.
I wait until steam sales are around and buy games 75% off or so.
I don't HAVE to purchase COD(i hate twitch shooters, i'm not 13) the day it comes out for $69.99 with a $10 DLC.
I buy used PC parts. I'm running 560ti 448 core SLI that cost me $150. My previous 460gtx cost me $100 used 3 years ago.
Subtract the price of the computer you are currently on from your gaming budget. I'm killing two birds with one stone while having a more than capable computer as well as a gaming machine.
You may say a computer costs more to build. You're right, initially. I'm running the same case i had 10 years ago. Same keyboard. Same liquid cooler for almost 5 years. Same quad core, and motherboard. Same speakers. Same monitor for over 6 years. ect.

Cost aside, if i were to pay a little more to be a PC gamer so be it.
I get to play games console gamers would never dream of. There are kickstarters, steam greenlight, and more indie games than you could think of for PC.
Oh, and i can use a USB controller whenever i want too.

/inb4 ban

We all know PC is better. :)

This is the one that really gets me. Controllers are a horrid user interface for a shooter, not that mouse and keyboard are super realistic. But come on, being able to hit someone with a gun that is standing 10 feet away from you should not require that level of fine motor control. I can weld, I can solder, I can bullseye squirrels with a crappy bb gun at 30 feet with iron sights, I cant even get on center of mass on a guy standing 10 feet from me with a controller.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 06-11-2013 10:52 PM

Joysticks are useless for a lot of games, especially shooters.
I cant even get a positive K/D ratio in cowaduty but I do alright when playing counterstrike. Counterstrike makes COD look like a childrens game.

Yeah if there ever was the king of twitch shooters its CS. I used to be a mid level player, on dialup. half my deaths were from completely freezing up with lag. :giggle:

How the dick do you play an RPG on a console without the interface becoming hopelessly cluttered with GUI elements or super menu based? I mean you need at least 20 buttons and a pointing device to have an effective RPG.
