Default 1999 Miata 1.8L oil cooler housing Removal

I am looking to run a external thermostatic oil cooler with a remote oil filter. If i were to do this is there a shorter filter stud that would allow me to remove the OEM oil filter housing and the coolant lines?

i am coming from the toyota world, and i know on my supra there was a stud that would be used when removing the oil cooler and running a thermostatic cooler.

You should be able to get it to all fit with the mocal adapter plate or if not you can remove that IM like a lot of other people do. If you dont care about that oil heater you can use the piece from a 1.6 miata motor and swap it out.

So there is a piece from the 1.6L that would work? id like to just remove it, i understand it is to heat the oil to operating temp faster, but if i am running a thermostatic cooler it would be fine to remove it i would imagine.

The part the oil filter threads onto on the 1.6 will thread right into your 1.8 block and it is quite a bit shorter since the 1.6 doesnt have the oil heater. Not sure where you can get one though. maybe a junkyard

I have also just cut these down to size successfully in the past.

B63010319 is the short stud.

That being said, it is a little tricky to use a thermostatic plate without the OEM oil heat exchanger, since bringing it in closer to the block creates more opportunities for the hoses to hit stuff.

What he said. Remove the sandwich plate, and out your oil cooler plate on with the adapter fittings and 2 90* line ends screwed on, you'll see what we mean

^ What I was thinking. Reports are that people with NA's are adding the "coolers" from NB's for spacing when adding Mocal Sandwich plates.

I was planning on running 2 sandwiches, with the 1st one capped off, to get the clearance needed; just been auto-x ing lately so I'm able to let it cool down between runs
