Seconding the sentiment that VQs sound amazing. I think the only motor on the road today that sounds better is the V10 in the new M5.

I really like sound of vr6 vw's, plus they are small, but I don't know what you would do about the tranny if you wanted one in a miata.

dude, the VQ is almost as wide as an ENTIRE damn miata. lol. I don't think you would have a prayer of that fitting between the frame rails with or without headers on it.

My engine is almost together.... I have the bottom end al together, now I just have to mount A/C and the belts and put it in the car.... after that is done I have to wire everything up... The suspension parts are all here, a depowered rack is finished. I now just hav eto find time to put it back together. Buy some -6an fuel lines to do a whole new return and feed line from the tank to the badass fi.18mm fuel rail that feeds 900cc injectors.
Good luck on your project. and hopefully next summer I'll be around the west coast so that we could race.....

since the sr20 is fairly common the rb20 which has more potential would be cool....even tho its an inline 6 its only 40lbs heavier than the sr20
