Picture in your head the pulses coming out of the stock ECU which drive the injector. They are on for a certain length of time, then turn off. The longer they are on, the more fuel is dispensed.

The Voodoo box (and the JR Powercard) work by increasing the duration of the injector pulse, bringing it closer to 100% duty cycle. The eManage Blue does the same thing, though it has a couple of extra features. These units are bandaids that allow you to get more fuel out of the stock injectors, or with the EMB to run slightly larger injectors..

To use injectors that are much larger than stock (and 440's are more twice as large) you need a unit that can actually decrease the pulsewidth when all that extra fuel is not needed. Of the piggybacks, only the eManage Ultimate and the XEDE perform this function. The XEDE comes with the support of Bell Engineering, however the EMU costs half as much and does more.

Realistically speaking however, the Era of the Piggyback ECU is in its autumn. Today, unless you need active OBD-II for smog inspection, full replacements such as the MegaSquirt are really the way to go.

Yep for 500$ or so a full ecu will allow you control and resolution to make all your power gaols.

MS, safc, emb/emu etc. all will help fueling. If you had a older miata this would be alot simpler but it seems you have choosen to be expensive, with the car choice, and now the tunning as well. To bad

There is also the new aem f/ic that sloS13 is running and FM may be supporting in the future (for those of us who don't despise FM). I wanted to go that route, but I am tuning stupid and decided to wait until I'm... less stupid?

I'll be checking and saving some money to make the next step.
