Good luck with the IRTBs.
You asked if anyone here is running them - yes, I am (but wasn't running them 6 years ago when you first asked!). The throttles by themselves are not significant power-adders, and even with supporting modifications do not add an incredible amount of power, ala turbo.
IRTBs do increase throttle response over the stock manifold/throttle, and they sound awesome.
You are right about the cold weather and running conditions, the temperature changes everything. Your best bet to easy starting and an even idle in varying temperatures, is to add an idle control valve. Your ECU likely supports one. Which ECU do you have, and for the matter, which throttles? Bosch 2 or 3 wire control valves are easy to wire and could be easy enough to connect to your vacuum source, depending on which throttles you have any what type of vacuum manifold/canister you use (if you are using one).
As for being fast, you know, it depends on the car and the driver, but mostly the driver. It has been my experience that there are plenty of 'old guys' that are damn fast, but I'm talking about racing/performance/competitive driving.
Speaking of being 'fast', throttles can help a little bit, but they are not the giant crutch that turbos are. You actually have to drive a naturally aspirated Miata skillfully in order to be fast/quick. Turbo guys have the luxury to rely on an obscene amount of straight line power to make up for the fact that they crawl around corners slower than a three legged pregnant mule. See what I just did there? I took a shot at turbos on a forum with 'turbo' in its name! Just joshin' everyone!
Whatever you do, please don't ever confuse the brake pedal with the gas pedal, especially when you are parked in front of a CVS or Walgreens. Again, just joshin'.

I personally would love to drive an IRTB Miata, from what I understand they kick butt. I've driven turbo Miatas before, they're fun and powerful. That's nice, but I get the feeling I would probably enjoy driving a well done IRTB car more.

I actually have a Weber carbed Miata, but the driving experience is very similar to a fuel infected ITB. Throttle response and part throttle acceleration is remarkable.
If you build a proper healthy motor with cylinder head and cam work, it will amaze you.

LOL, and I was just about to jokingly recommend you convert to carbs. Honestly miata2fast's car must be quick, as he did put down some decent n/a 1/4 mile times. I still think its full on retard to convert to carbs. But hey, if it were to make you enjoy the car more I can't hate.

I had originally intended to build with Webers.. But when I was ready to buy I could not find a kit.. The webers were not the problem. I just could not find a manifold.. After I had already bought the Fuji kit I found a setup, but then it was too late.. I have been told the Miata corners so hard that the carbs would starve out in prolonged cornering.. That may be true, my 280z did on occasion. I loved the simplicity of a retro setup, no computer.. I used to love tuning the Z. Setting dwell and synching carbs etc was a relaxing afternoon that could be depended on to yield positive results.. I really was not looking for a super fast car.. I have had a few. While they were a lot of fun, it is a miracle I am alive or out jail. I just could not keep my foot out of it.. Still can't... I just wanted something different from everyone else that was a bit more fun than stock.. So at least half the money I spent was in suspension and other drivetrain parts.. I will probably never be done tweaking, I guess that if part of the equation.. And at least for me the car is very fun to drive.

oh wow, i barely remember even starting this thread...
long story short, the 1990 1.6L miata i was asking about in this got burnt to a crisp thanks to some preggo teenager whos car caught on fire while driving and decided parking right next to my freshly restored car...
I went into the military, got deployed, and used that money to buy myself a turbo miata. and I am not looking back.
fuji's miata was quick but you also have to realize he has more money into it than most of the people here. plus he had gears which is another thing no one thinks about that helped his times.
I would love to have an ITB miata as a DD the sounds they make are amazing.. but my fun/track/mountain car will continue to be a turbo.

These are on the car now.. My biggest problem has been tuning.. I am finally starting to pull it together.. You are right it is fun.. A Lot like a big shifter cart.. It pulls hard to about 7800.. I think ther is more power available, but I am still learning how to get it..

sorry I did not reply sooner.. I like many have an insane schedule.. Just like any discussion where people choose a side to believe.. both are right and not completely right.. I have struggled a lot trying to make a daily drive irtb car that has no loss of comfort and issues.. I am close to the ease of use and pretty good mileage.. Still a lot more power than stock.. But I have had it show a lot more potential.. Unfortunately when I get the power peaking the friendlyness goes away.. My fault I am sure.. I have been in a 200 hp plus turbo miata and it really pulls like crazy when the boost comes on. And it was not a long wait.. but there was a soft sort of mushy area before the power got there.. It was much quieter as well.. I might like that better.. The throttle bodies have a bit of a flat spot, but not much maybe a quarter second, that is probably my tune.. But when they turn on the sound is amazing.. I keep pulling the rev limit up and 8000 rpm comes up fast. I will probably not risk more without a new bottom end.. There is no doubt a turbo would beat me in a drag.. especially a long one.. But Everytime I think I want to burn the whole thing down and run away I do an all out pull and I change my mind.. I easily beat a lot of cars I should not be able to challenge and I have 206000 plus miles.. So for a dinosaur I figure I am doing OK.. I think everyone here has a lot of love, money and time in their ride.. Yhe best car is the one you are driving.. Today..

But there is no replacement for CI.. and the rest of the parts to support it.. I only want to have fun and stay out of jail.. A big block and a frame that can take the power makes everyone look slow.. Or at least makes them try harder.. Too many bucks, and shortening of lifespan for me.. We in the small sports car group are more like Hobits in the world of speed.. Not too many 200 mph Miata's out there..
