Default Base Timing Issue

Hi everyone, I'm desparate for help.

1993 1.6. Stock
Setting engine to base 10 deg ign timing causes massive loss of power, can barely get the car to move. I have to set the timing super high (18 -22) Just to get it to run anywhere near normal.

I'm assuming this will correlate with my issue*
Really bad misfire
Tore everything apart and redid the timing belt to make sure; everything matches up the way it should. Lobes, marks, tdc perfect.


Anyone experience this? I'm struggling.

Has the harmonic balancer sliped?

how would I go about figuring that out?

Put cylinder one to TDC based on a soft rod in the number 1 spark plug hole then check that the TDC mark on your balancer matches the TDC mark on your timing cover.

This isn't the 100% way but if you're balancer has slipped 10 degrees or more it should make it obvious.

Yup, you guys where right! It was like an entire inch off. I made new marks and engine rune and sounds about right.

Still having spark issue though, new plugs and wires, proper gap; thinking coil pack :(?

Just a heads up, once the balancer slips, it keeps doing so, so your marks will be off next time. Time for a new one.

I can confirm that, even starting/stopping the motor will cause it to slip again.
