Anyone done this? My buddy Ted did his, but he did it the right way and got a manual rack.

I don't really see much need for power steering on a Miata and will not be installing the pump on hte new engine and since I'll have room to work when I swap engines I want to do this. There was a good tech article on doing this in a Sport Compact Car magazine back when they had good tech articles and weren't the ricerboi comic book that they are now. However that was then and like almost 8 years ago... so ****.

 

How is this the "right" way? If you remove the seal from the powersteering rack, you basically have a Manual rack... with a shorter ratio.

IMO, putting a manual rack in the power(depowered) rack cars... is a downgrade.

Many of the guys on here swear by a PS depower. Most of them just loop the lines, though FM does show how to take the seal out.

I have looped lines, it's a big improvement over having a powered rack. I can really tell what people meant when they say the factory PS is overboosted.

The factory manual rack is too slow a ratio for me. I like having the same ratio as PS without the pump. I'll be doing the full depower when I get home.

 

Thats not the right way...thats just going to a manual rack...the depowered factory rack is a faster ratio...

I did it, haven't even removed the seals because I'm lazy but it works great.

Kinda. Some of the lines need to be looped to get the least resistance (without pulling the rack, that is). I don't know of any pics of the looped lines offhand but try searching on clubroadster.

I am doing the depower as well. I ordered the non-ps pulley assembly and belt for the car. In no way will I get rid of the A/C while I live in FL. For those of you that are interested in removing the PS pump along with depowering your rack, and you want to keep your A/C, will need this belt tensioner assembly. They run about 140.00 new. I lucked out and found a used one for less than half of that shipped to my door.

Here are the factory part numbers, and keep in mind this is for a 1.8L. It might be the same for the 1.6L.

When I replaced my motor I depowered because I didn't want to put everything back, lol.

I've driven a factory power, factory manual, looped line depower, and just did the FM style depower on my 90. I can't say which was my favorite yet because I haven't had the 90 aligned since it came back online last weekend after all the mods. I can definitely say two things however. I loved the factory manual, and I hated the looped line. Depowering FM style was straightforward, however, I had darn near an empty engine bay to work with. I also have to hope that the shop can align my car properly, as it's way out of whack right now.

i also have driven the powered depowered power by looped and now i have a manual and i like the manual over depowered but gotta love my power even though it is a little over powered.
