De-rezzing?

I happened to stumble into the NC forum at M.net a little while ago, and noticed several threads where people mentioned that they had de-rezzed their cars.
Now, I came of age in the 1980's, and so my concept of de-rezzing comes principally from the movie Tron. It's not something that you want to happen to your car, or yourself, for that matter.
What the heck am I missing?

If you ever read something about the NC and don't get it, just assume it has something to do with an exhaust tip or exhaust system. They are absolutely obsessed with mufflers and tips.
But Neo is correct, a lot of them remove the factory resonator.

Is it just me or do you guys loathe posts in the NC section the most over there? Maybe it's just a newer model thing.
I wasn't around the forum when the NB just came out, but I wonder if back then, there was also an unusually large number of retards on the NB forum.

So since I have a 2 1/2" midpipe with no cat and resonator, does this mean my car is De-Rezzed and De-Catted? I would rather go the extra text and say, "my car is capable of making more power, cause there is less restriction." I hate terms like "de-rezz" and my favorite is one I hear on this site a lot, "Owned". WTF is that? It's like, "I paid for my miata with cash, so once I got the title it was proof that my car got (owned)". Different meaning than, "I was on the highway and a Mustang 5.0 pulled up next to me...we both hit the gas and he got (owned)". I didn't buy him, his mom, or his car from him. All I did was prove that my car was faster. Perhaps I should say, "I pulled away from him like he was standing still." Or simply, "I beat yet another V-8 in a roll race."
P.S. I just got off work, my truck has a cracked cylinder head, and my dog is in heat.

In all seriousness though, I think the real issue is more one of attitude and perspective.
As a general rule, when a car model is only a few years old, you'll find that a majority of the people who drive that car are, well, the sort of people who buy (or lease) new cars in the first place. They tend to be concerned about things like resale value and not voiding warranties, and therefore tend to limit the scope of their "high performance" thinking to shift *****, fart cans, chrome-plated plastic doo-dads, and the like. There is some sort of imaginary line that cannot be crossed.
By comparison, take a car that's 10-20 years old and simply by dint of human nature, you'll find a rather different attitude surrounding them. When you're at a point where the warranty expired two presidents ago and the car's model year is closer than not to being de-listed from the KBB, it's not so big a deal to start cutting holes in things, doubling (or tripling) the engine's horsepower, ripping out bits that you've turned into metal salad, welding things to the chassis, and the like. IOW, the vehicle has finally ceased to be a status symbol or objet d'art, and it has become a car.
