Headlight Idea?

So I personally do not like having pop ups popped up all the time, and on my old MK1 MR2 I had driving lights (H4 high/low bulbs) installed in the turn signals to use in low light conditions (like a well lit street at night). So my question is... Is there any way to retro fit some projectors w/ HIDs behind the turn signal lens? This would mean relocating the turn signals to the driving lamp space. I think it would look cool, and you could sand and polish the lens to be smooth for better light output. You could also remove the regular pop ups to save some weight.

sweeeet, you just made my day. That is exactly what I was looking for.

Moving the oem bulb to the corner melted the lens a tad...even using a short glode bulb...I'd try swapping to one of those neato LED corner bulbs.

coastertrav 12-28-2006 12:26 AM

yeah, seems like heat is an issue, also I would probably get rid of the reflectors in the large housing and put in some Hella HID projectors. Just making plans for a car I don't have yet, currently I'm a NB guy.

Would you be able to aim that light? it seems that you would run the risk of flashing oncoming traffic which is not cool. Also to get the best results at least a rough aim is required. Just a thought. Looks really cool though.

Sirnixalot 12-28-2006 10:10 AM

you would probably have to stack ashim behind one of the securing screws to angle it.

A little off the topic but I just picked up a few sets of bulbs from www.powerbulbs.co.uk. They offer damn near free shipping to the US and buy one pair get one pair free on their house brand bulb. I just installed these http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/product....For=&PT_ID=113
in my fiance's Scion Xb. The light is so white with 0 blue. They are the same wattage as the stock bulbs and were a huge improvement over the stock bulbs.
Just thought I would share. I was so happy with them I bought a few more sets for myself and Christmas gifts.

No projectors required

Is there a aftermarket lens made out of glass for the blinker light?

Ben 12-28-2006 01:01 PM

You mean replace the entire plastic assembly with a glass assembly? Why?

cjernigan 12-28-2006 02:00 PM

Pretty sure that writeup said that he isn't having any problems with the lense melting or deforming at all from heat so why would you want glass.

Loki047 12-28-2006 02:02 PM

look for LED lights, maybe you can find something bright enough

Loki047 12-28-2006 03:24 PM

I would look for something with lumens rated.

Yeah, I just found that thread. If you used the factory lens and sanded/polished the inside it'd look really pimp. Too bad the PIAA's are $350 and that's money not spent to make the car faster. Maybe someday.

chuckerants 12-30-2006 06:25 PM

Unlike most bulbs, Power Plus is also filled with Xenon gas to deliver maximum performance without increasing the wattage of the product.
I call BULLSHIT on this claim.

Yea thats my setup with the P-3000 headlights.
Originally I did just as Tylerdurden suggested - I cut the front clear lens half off of the parking lights and used that as the front lens but I didn't like the lines in the lens and how opaque they were so I fabbed the clear acrylic lens as shown in that pic VRTSid posted.

To address what Tylerdurden said about the PIAA's being $350 not going towards making the car faster I say phooey. This was one among several mods that all greatly affected the aerodynamics of the car. This mod allows full removal of the headlights and motors (25 lbs saved) as well as eliminates the barn doors during all night driving which saves gas mileage and greatly reduces drag.
ust had to point that out.

You can obviously imagine what the light looked like with the stock lens over it during the day time - it looked factory. Here's the only pic I have of the lights on with the factory lens over them...

I wanted something that was an actual headlight not just something to use in lighted areas... works great.
