I'm a retard

So the last two days have been me outside working on installing my turbo kit. Part of this involved tapping the oil pan. So... I drain my oil. So far so good, right?

Well... I got so gung ho about finishing, and fire the car up. I let it idle for about 25 seconds before realizing that I'm a fucktard and forgot to put new oil in. :bowrofl:

So... filled er up and so far so good. Doesn't seem like there was any damage. But I'll never really know I guess. Car runs (for now)... Lucky, I oil dumped the oil from the pan. I didn't change the filter since it's only been 1000kms. Hopefully that quart or so that was in there was enough to keep things lubricated.

What are the possible long term effects of running and engine without oil for 25-35 seconds?

Ya, ya go ahead make fun of me. I'm not usually one to do something this stupid. But I guess we all have our times.

Bond 05-11-2010 02:32 AM

You are such a virgin

turotufas 05-11-2010 02:35 AM

I think you will be okay.

crnrhrd 05-11-2010 02:49 AM

Just out of curiosity did you drain the oil before or after you tapped the pan?

I doubt 25-35 seconds of idling will do much. Now had you gone out and romped on it a little it would probably be a different story.

Jfornachon 05-11-2010 03:17 AM

Hopefully you flushed out the pan before you put oil back in. You should be fine.

Have a great day,
Jared

Oscar 05-11-2010 04:31 AM

expect to eat bearings in 5 miles. Also, you are a tard.

ArtieParty 05-11-2010 08:39 AM

Re-tard.

levnubhin 05-11-2010 09:17 AM

25 seconds is fine imo

26 seconds and your bearings are toast though:giggle:

You gonna fuck on me!

lordrigamus 05-11-2010 11:00 AM

wayne_curr 05-11-2010 11:11 AM

My bearings are toast after just cranking the engine over a bunch with fuel in the oil. Good luck.

Bryce 05-11-2010 11:15 AM

It wouldn't hurt to pull the valve cover and check one of the cam caps for wear.

wayne_curr 05-11-2010 11:17 AM

My cam caps are fine yet my main and rod bearings are screwed. Cams dont tell the whole story.

hustler 05-11-2010 11:18 AM

Put this in the list of mistakes you'll never make again. Sometimes this is how we learn.

levnubhin 05-11-2010 11:23 AM

This thread is how you get gay.

Man I totally would have kept this to myself but thats just me :giggle:

Ya, I did. With oil and brake clean. The reason I left the old filter in as well is because I am only going to run this oil for a day or two then flush again. And it should be good. I also used grease on the drill bit to catch as much of the filings as I could.

I am a big virgin. :makeout:

So is that what happened? So since you need a new engine, wanna sell me your top? lol...

A shitty way to learn... but you're right. Car is going for dyno tuning next week. So if it lasts through that, I think all will be fine.

I'm pulling the cover to clean/paint it tomorrow. What would abnormal wear look like? I don't dabble in engine building. Only "external" things.

You sir, should not be allowed to work on cars. Did you seriously put something combustible in the oil pan??

Most forms of brake clean are so un-flammable that they can be used to put out fires. Seriously.

I flushed mine out with mineral spirits which is combustible, no issues as of yet. I also run rich which lets gasoline (you know, its a little combustible) get into the oil pan :dunno:

Falcon-> Abnormal wear will show up as deep scoring or gouging, or heavy scuffing.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 05-11-2010 12:21 PM

Ive set my hands on fire with brake cleaner on numerous occasions (yes, on purpose)
It doenst burn very hot...

Nope.

Just following directions from this website "sir". Many people have flushed it with brake clean. And even if there is a trace left, I did the brake clean first and then flushed it with oil after.

Ok. I'll take a look tomorrow. I'm honesty mostly concerned with the bottom end. I have a new head going on soon, with a full port job. So worst case scenario, if the caps have wear I can always swap the head early.

Any scoring that you can catch your fingernail on is no good. Make sure you use a torque wrench in INCH pounds to tighten the caps back down.

Edit: and i'm seriously considering selling the top. I'm poor.

So you flushed it with oil after but you still had a quart of oil in the engine when you started? Post 1 says you had a quart of oil in there.

falcon 05-11-2010 12:39 PM

I flushed the pan with oil/brake clean with the drain open, so it went right into the drain pan. Then left it for a day or so. That's why I forgot. Drained it on Sun morning, and finished everything yesterday night. I didn't remove the filter, and from experience there is usually 3/4-1 qt of oil reside in the filter/filter area.

ok.

falcon 05-11-2010 01:38 PM

I just talked to one of the mechanics here at work (motorcycle dealership) and he said if I drove 100kms already not to worry. He also said at the worst there may be some cam cap wear but the bottom end should be fine. He is going to help me check the head tomorrow.

jayc72 05-11-2010 02:21 PM

Drive it like it never happened. If there is damage, that ship has already sailed. For the record I nearly did the same thing when I installed my first turbo on this car. Had the key in the ignition and everything, lucky for me a friend stopped me! Being tired and enthusiastic can be a dangerous combo.

falcon 05-11-2010 03:25 PM

^^ That was exactly it. I had so many hurdles along the way that I was excited when it was done. Totally off my mind that it had no oil.

Oh well... exactly... IF there is damage, it's already happened. Nothing I can do now but drive it until/if it lets go.

Sparetire 05-11-2010 06:37 PM

Agreed. My guess is that you will have no problems.

FWIW, I cleaned an oil pan with gasoline awhile back, though it was totally off the engine and I then washed it down and dried it and let it sit for a couple days.

AlexO35 05-11-2010 06:51 PM

The real lesson to learn is not to let it happen again. When you drain the oil, put the oil fill cap on the hood latch so that the hood won't close. Something like that.

I have a similar ritual for removing tires. Before I take tires off, I put the torque wrench on the drivers seat. Just makes it more difficult to forget the important stuff.

NA6C-Guy 05-11-2010 07:16 PM

As if it hasn't been beaten to death already, it should be fine. 20-30 seconds at idle isn't much, and there was still oil left on the parts, so that should have been more than enough.

I've done similar, but mine was with the trans. I did a full engine break in (3rd and 4th gear 2k to redline pulls) and probably 20 additional miles with a dry trans (well, maybe quart low). Probably where my trans noises came from.

kww502 05-22-2010 03:57 PM

Yeah when I first got my miata the clutch went out and when I went to pull the trans I drained the fluid and it was almost completely water. Took the tranny apart everything was fine replaced with fluid and has been working fine for a long time and there was no telling how long I drove the car with hardly no trans fluid. I couldnt believe there wasnt any damage.

falcon 05-24-2010 02:15 AM

Well the car made it through dyno tuning and this whole last weekend I beat the absolute shit out of the car at the Knox Mountain Hill Climb (http://www.knoxmtnhillclimb.ca).

I think it will be just fine :D

example of what I did on the weekend

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khn4XCXcYk0

TrackTestedMiata 05-24-2010 02:37 AM

in had my drain plug fall out on the highway.....cooked my turbo, not m engine. drove for 2-3k with oil pouring out. epic fail.

TurboRoach 05-24-2010 02:59 AM

That looks like fun. Do you have to have a competition license? I see references to it on the forms but nothing stating whether it is required.

falcon 05-24-2010 03:05 AM

Yes.

I took a school and now hold a novice race license as well as a Sr. Solosprint (thats what the hill climb is) license.

189whp @ 12psi trailing to 9psi at redline.

this was on a dynapack.

tuning was done at Blitzkrieg Autowerks in Vancouver, BC.

That honestly isn't too bad for a Greddy kit. You still havn't sent me your datalogs/.MSQs btw ;).

falcon 05-24-2010 05:35 PM

Ya, I need to get you that. I've been busy getting ready for the hill climb. I also realized I need more power to be competitive so a new head is currently being built and I'm going to go for 240whpish with water injection. :D

You could save some frustration and just buy my old setup :P. It'll be for sale by the end of the summer, and would give you quite a bit of headroom over that tiny greddy :D

Fireindc 05-24-2010 06:43 PM

Where is your wastegate boost source taken from? Why dont you fix that boost drop, and run a few more psi of boost. 14psi should still be safely within the Greddys efficiency range.

falcon 05-24-2010 06:52 PM

It's off the comp housing... I'm planning to get the source from after the IC.

BUT... will it be dangerous to run a solid 12PSI if it holds? Don't feel like paying for more dyno time right now.

JayL 05-24-2010 09:33 PM

At least with the link you have active knock control. Doing the hill climb is going to really test the tune.

falcon 05-24-2010 09:54 PM

I already did it on the weekend. And I have an MS... not Link,

http://loadedagain.smugmug.com/Cars/...39_VJDnZ-M.jpg

this was just as I pulled in... cleaning the car from the trip. Race trim looked a bit different :D But not as angry as the AWD Turbo Rabbit next to me... :O or the supercharged Bullitt Mustang hiding next over.

good call, that WILL fix your issue.

However, i wouldn't fix that until you are able to verify/fix the tune since it will be seeing more boost up top and hitting some cells that were not tuned.

falcon 05-24-2010 10:04 PM

It was run up to 14PSI on the dyno... without problem. Going to wait until my WB arrives before doing it.

Did you happen to see how well the black sunbeam tiger did? Or see him at all for that matter? He's a friend of mine.

Wasn't really paying much attention to anyone else.

I have one vid but it's upside down since that's the way the camera would mount. My camera ran out of space on my fastest run which pissed me off.
