Do any of you guys ever have problems maintaining control with manual steering? Have you ever had a situation where the wheel has gotten away from you such as trying to shift in a turn or something similar. From what i can see, the real problems would come when **** starts to get out of hand and how quickly you can react to get the car back under control.

 

I would not trade my manual rack for anything. I have so much more control than any miata I have ever driven with a power rack.

If your wheel is hopping out of your hand you are doing something wrong regardless of what kind of rack you have. PS you should not be shifting in a turn.

 

I depowered my rack (not fully yet, ie: removal of the inner seal) and I love it. I can't stand the feeling of powered racks... so detached from reality.

 

i feel i can control a lost rear better without power assisted steering, as you can feel exactly what it is your steering input is doing. you'll have no issues flopping the wheel back and forth fast enough to keep up.

 

I wouldn't have it any other way.... Regardless if you have power or manual, you just need to be quick with reactions when the car snaps. But if you are feeling what the car is telling you, you will know when that limit is. With a manual, that limit is much more communicative.

 

Power steering is for girls.

I pulled my rack about a month ago. Driving home the first night was tough because I was still a girl back then. After I got used to it and built up some MAN strength its no problem at all. I love it and wouldn't have it any other way. When I go drive other cars with PS it just feels so wierd.

Also shift in turn=BAD!

Downshift before the turn so you can accelerate through.

 

I will agree with all of these guys, first couple drives may be a little awkward after pulling the PS but it's so much better afterwards, wouldn't go back for anything.

 

I love my power steering. Did I mention I have AC too?

 

I guess i just need to get out on the track and feel it for myself. I looped my lines a couple months back and i really like it. I am just worried about what will happen the first time the **** hits the fan.

 

The only problems you'll encounter is when pulling out of a parking spot with that Latte in your other hand. Trust us, it is a better feel. Tough is driving a '61 Chevy Pickup with no power steering, a tiny "pep boy special" wheel, and vice grips on the blown wheel cylinders with drum brakes.
I feel sorry for whoever pulls out in front of this beast......

 

once you get the jist of it, one handed isn't hard....just make sure the wheels are moving...

lmao. When people ask me if it sucks I just tell them its a little hard to drive in a parking lot with a soda in one hand while talking on the cell phone...other than that it isn't that hard at all.

 

< 1 MPH = potential pain in the *** with only 1/2 a hand on the wheel.

So no stories of broken fingers from out of control steering wheels?

 

This isn't driver's ed....we don't scare people by saying things like "if you don't have your hands in the right position, an airbag can cut off your thumbs" just get on the damn track and don't worry about whether you've got PS or not.

 

Haha okay. I do need to get some track time. Putnam park is calling me.

 

My first car had no PS (light as a tin can). Only problem was when stopped completely, or after coming around a right-angle corner (like after stopping at a red light) and letting the wheel auto-center. I had a pep-boys-pole-position wheel that would bust you UP if you kept your fingers in there.

Solution: Extend the booger hooks while the wheel whips.

Yep, get out and have fun.

 

Its not like a force feedback arcade came...I've gotten sideways as **** by accident from hitting ice/water etc sometimes and you just react normally...and she corrects just fine.
