Hit the whole area down there with Simple Green before you start... most of the oil will slide right off the top of the SG. You're still gonna have to clean up a little, but it's not as bad.
Otherwise, the oil-filter-relocation-kit is your only choice. Check the supporting vendors, some of them sell it.

Shouldn't the filter be hanging down so the oil won't run out when you loosen it? Has gravity stopped working in your garage? I like repositioning the filter so it's easier to get at. Maybe it's easier to get a rag under it where it's at now too.
Oh, and Y8's. What's with the stock air pipe into the intake?

there may or may not be air in the filter at startup and actually it may only be "empty" when the system is open to atmosphere during draining.
but the real answer is: i dont care and it's been on there most of the miles on the odometer.
