Unhappy My engine is dead!

Well, it had to happen sometime. Finally got around to the compression check and got 90 - 179 - 180 - 95 so looks like the rings (and probably a couple valves as well) are dead in cylinders 1 and 4.

At least some of you got a good show! Debating now whether to part the car out or swap in another engine....

Definately not worth it throw in the towel....

Time to upgrade the 1.6.... you can probably go built, or just get a wrecker 1.6, and rebuild yours over time. <G> The swap isn't too bad.

Or you can always go 1.8, but then you have manifold, blah, blah.....

Although, if you are parting it out, I'm sure there some BRG panels, I can use. <VBG>

Time for a 1.8

I know I've got at least one good 99 cylinder head and manifold.

I say find another cheap 1.6 and swap that sucker out. I'd even come over and give you a hand.

ya just get an unmolested, low mileage 1.6 and swap it in. I bet you can find one for under $400 within a week man. Oh and if you need any tips on how to work certain bolts, what can be left in car, etc give me a holler ... ive my engine in and out a ton of times now.

Turn up the boost!

Some DSMs ran their best times with 90psi in all four holes and burning coolant. I'd say run it until it dies, THEN build a motor. Or build the motor on the side whilst beating the **** out of the current one, you may just have some fun doing it.

second the "turn up the boost" just run a drip pan and second cat to catch any oil that might leave the motor.

I bet you hit 300 rwhp.

(or just buy a 94-97 crate motor and rob's 99 head and drop it in--FM has that engine swap kit and everything)

Do not swap a used 1.6. I know alot of people on the boards are all about that approach, but seriously Tom, you have reached the limits of the 1.6 and boost. Its time to build a 1.6, 1.8 or FE3. Swapping a used 1.6 just means more 15psi runs and Braineack making fun of your 210whp.

BUT if you must do a swap.. heres a 200 dollar 1.6 motor in NJ

I agree. If your car runs and/or if it's not a daily driver there is no sense going through the hassle of an engine swap without also doing an upgrade. Remember, cost is only part of the equasion in an engine swap, the other part is your time. You'll get much more value from your time if you put in a stronger motor.

Tom seriously build the hell out of that motor. 2.0 and everything. I support that far above switching to the 1.8, i mean you'll still end up with something with limited boost potential and you would have to get rid of all your current work.

I say get a good running 1.6L, and build this one up with some serious hardware. We should try to get the 1.6 a better reputation and show what it can do when fully built and running some serious boost. That is my plan when this engine gives out. Get the belfab rods, some weiscos, knife edge the crank, and a built top end, and a megasquirt to tune it all together. By then I will also be looking at probably a good sized t3 and a jgs mani and stainless everything.
