I'm currently in the process of removing alot from under the dash on my 93. Heater core, heat a/c controls removed, blower and all wires that include those. I have come to the air bag wiring im stumped and I cannot find a diagram thats able to help me identify what all I need to yank to get out of my wiring harness any other suggestions would be awesome guys thanks.

 

Get a factory shop manuel with a wiring diagram. I had one but that went when I sold the car. You can find the wiring diagrams online but I dont know where they would be. You could also buy an ebay manuel that comes on a disk. I cant promis you how good they are. You could try miata.net.

The only other thing is you can trace the wire from sensors back to the computer. You could use a dvom. then cut the wire and try to pull it out of the loom.

Are you worried that the airbag will deploy while removing it?

Disconnect the battery (you may want to let sit a few minutes before work). The airbag has a plug that connects with the wiring harness (at least mine did). Unplug and remove the airbag. If you want to remove the wiring, start from the airbag and work your way back to it's source. There is no danger of airbag deploying if done that way.

If you gut your harness from any accessory that you are removing first, you are less likely to make a mistake. I bought an Advance Auto service manual for my car, and the wiring diagram in that crappy book was enough to get the job done. The wire color codes makes it easier than you think.

 

I just traced all the wires back to their respective plugs. It's a giant pain in the *** to do it, and you have to have the whole harness out of the car. At least, I would never try with it still in the car. Just trace all of the plugs and their respective wires back to their source and yank them all out. Just don't forget to leave the horn wiring in, it's a green/red wire.

 

or you go to Useful Saved Posts > 90-93 Shop Manual and you use the resources we've diligently gather for you guys so you dont have to **** like trace individual wires.

Sorry didnt know I was in english class. SO since I had the time and it's not my daily i have the dash out and traced the wires all the way through the fire wall to the side sensors in the fender wells and to the two blue boxes by the steering column, not only do you learn a ton about your wiring setup you clean it up a **** ton by doing this. With a full cage a set of Bride's and harnesses I do believe the air bag is useless.

 

I just came here to tell you what I did, but it looks like you already found the answer.

IIRC, there was a sensor in each fender well, as well as one in the front core support. Then like you said, the 2 blue boxes under the dash that say FORD on them. I didnt take my dash out to remove them, and I literally snapped that **** into pieces pulling them off.

BTW, I sold the steering wheel, airbag, and the 3 sensors (1 sensor per auction), all for around $100. Not bad, and it was better than letting the **** sit in my toolbox!

 

Thanks Vashthestampede I actually went through the wiring harness and all to remove the wires I pretty much want this to be the most basic a car can be. The wiring harness is tiny compared to the original.

Do you really think it is necessary to put a period at the end of all that. I mean we are all mechanics that make sense out of nothing under the hood of theses cars. If no one can figure it out I wont take advice for them.

I did the same but got slightly less. Got $51 for the airbag and $15 for the 3 sensors. Paid for my new steering wheel.

 

You actually got people who wanted that stuff! Where did you post it all? I need to move that stuff out of my garage!

 

Nice! So worth the extra cash rather than just sitting in the garage taking up space.

I put everything on ebay. There's always someone, somewhere, looking for something! lol

 

Ya money is money you get rid of these parts you can get more performance.

 

I pulled out the airbags and all the blue sheathed wires and blue control modules. I'm saving the wire hunt for the bulk-head/tear down conversion.
