OK, think I just got thrown off by the "ECE" name. ECE means nothing more than E-code pattern correct? If so, Miatarodster has them for $75/pr shipped.

And to be honest I never noticed it said ECE.

 

So E codes + HID eh? Hmm

 

I don't know how much HIDs would change the situation, but they have a cutoff unlike DOT head lights. So why not?

I had the 6054 "everycar in america" ecodes on my celica. i kept the housings in case I ever got another car with that style. the cutoff was impressively non US. worth a shot with the HIDs.

Okay I'm a little rusty on the lighting subject, but if memory serves me correctly this "E-code" talk is nothing more than European headlight housings, which, are technically not legal in the united states anyway.. Which is why they're "e-code."

Second, don't waste your time or money on the socalled 7" projector light housings, they're complete and total ******* trash. Even with my HID lights, they put out less light than in a standard h4 parabolic housing.




I've been running the exact same brand of ballast. They're great for what I paid for em. My expensive set died in 8 months, these have been kicking for 2 years now. I opted for the 6000k bulbs, which put out nearly 1.25 times the lumens of the 8000k. Personally don't see why bulbs are even made > 6000k myself, but whatever. To each their own.

To those calling HID conversion ricers, you can eat my ******* ***. Like ben said, take your m.net thinking back to miata.net. My safety on the road is much more important to me then caring about anyone else on the road. Been driving with HIDs in my miata for 3 years now and have been questioned by the police about them one time. If you want cheeze dick 20 watt yellow lights in your car so some big *** truck can pull out infront of you, fine, just don't **** on my parade cause you've got sand..

This is the bulb I run. First and second pictures are the same bulb. Third photograph is a standard HID light bulb. Notice the little hat on my first bulb? I believe thats a D2R designed for a parabolic reflector housing, where teh D2S (Second bulb) is designed for a projector with horizontal cutoff. While my lights are hellatiously bright, and scatter light in all directions, its not nearly intense to oncoming traffic as a D2S in Parabolic housing. Thats my $0.02 on the matter.






I've been running mine directly off the factory headlight wiring harness on both my miata and my crotch rocket.

 

Yet their Ballasts look IDENTICAL to mine, with a different sticker...

 

And they look exactly like mine, which is a different brand from ebay. I bet they're all from the same factory in China, just different labels. Just get whatever is cheapest, and if it blows get another one.

 

You found my exact plan! For 80$ if they last a year, sweet. I'll spend it every year if I have to, really. I don't care.

 

Spent more time working with the ching chong housings to get a decent aim. Got them pretty decent. Actually the cut off is not too bad, and light is distributed pretty well. A strip of tape placed horizontally on the bottom of the lenses would make them totally usable--and a huge improvement over stock. But I've already ordered the Hella E codes so oh well. I'm sure they'll be even better anyway.

BTW, if some one were to want my ching chong housings, cost of shipping and they're yours. They do look and work better than the stock sealed beams with H4 halogens.

 

My cheap-o point-n-shoot doesn't do a very good job of this. These ching chong housings have a much better cut off than what the pics show. Also I think it will be clear that I lowered the driver's side lamp a little extra, just to totally ensure that oncoming traffic won't be blinded. It's a little low and to the right. Bet you've said that before...

In pic 3 I drew in the cut off lines, as the eye sees them. They're not quite as defined as what I've drawn, but not far off either. The reflective garage door was playing tricks with the camera. The two circles are "hot spots" or whatever, caused by light reflecting off the stupid city bulbs in the ching chong housings. Too bad.

This headlamp set up is amazing compared to stock. Well worth the time and effort. And when aimed as per Daniel Stern's directions (I did aim the driver's side an extra 1.5" low), are not discourteous to oncoming traffic. Driving around tonight resulted in 0 people flashing their high beams at me.
