After looking more closely, I think the tack welds I thought I was looking at were just the epoxy you used on the yarn.

shuiend 08-14-2014 12:46 PM

Are these going to be an item you regularly stock, or only 1 group buy like the headlight brackets?

92mazdaspeed 08-14-2014 12:47 PM

Finally.😃 I can't wait to hack up my extra hood. 😃

Is it tomorrow yet?
Just make sure you guys make the edges nice and clean. so i can drill and rivet the thing to my current hood.

We're going to do the group buy first, then if response is good we'll probably work on making them available through Good-Win Racing, but no time frame or guarantee on that. The group buy will be the place to get them for sure and at a MT.net-only price lower than they will retail for.

Yep, chose a hole size that works with both metric hardware and rivets. Stainless hardware will be included, but that way you have the rivet option.

aluminum rivets ftw!!

darkcambria 08-14-2014 01:00 PM

Very nice! Thank you for taking the time to capture and show data. I appreciate that and my money will be going to you rather than others who just liked to talk.

Leafy 08-14-2014 01:03 PM

You should probably stick with aluminum rivets only. Stainless contacting aluminum in something that will be wet and exposed to electrolytes will make for some bad times.

ThePass 08-14-2014 01:17 PM

I've had stainless hardware on aluminum parts for years, haven't noticed any issues yet, but I'll keep that in mind. I am expecting that everyone will paint these - they look great in even just rustoleum flat black. Although the really clean/sleeper look is going to be if someone paints them body color and paints the bolt/rivet heads :) If someone wants the aluminum look I'll recommend they clear coat them though.

Got pics of the whole hood?

if my hood lasts long enough to corrode to steel parts i would consider that a success. i'm on my 3rd hood out of 5 years of racing.

Nope, this is the only pic you get ever ;)

Tomorrow.

Is there a third option to achieve a 'flush' factory look? JB Weld? Crazy Glue, maybe?

You could probubly use body panel adhesive. A lot of cars that come from the factory are now using it. It's just a really strong 2 part epoxy made for bonding metal panels together.

ThePass 08-14-2014 02:18 PM

As in, no hardware? No, not that I will stand behind. But a few rivets painted body color is going to be very low-key.

-Ryan

vehicular 08-14-2014 02:18 PM

Lol @ Crazy Glue. This is racing, not arts and crafts, man!

3M sells a line of very excellent panel bonding adhesives that are easy to use and excellent for something like this. Window Weld or RTV are surprisingly good for this sort of thing, too, if you're ghetto like that.

TheScaryOne 08-14-2014 02:31 PM

From what I can find, it looks like aircraft use countersunk rivets on the skin for drag reduction. It looks like the substrate material needs to be countersunk, not the skin, and then the rivet is "dimpled" flush with the surface.

3/16" aluminum countersunk rivets are available on McMaster.

Edit: I would do bonding material and rivets. Rule #37: There is no overkill, there is only "open fire" and "time to reload."

FrankB 08-14-2014 02:39 PM

To bounce off of somebody's comment about losing the rivets on the hood. If the louvers run along side the under bracing, instead of riveting them to the outer skin of the hood, is it possible to rivet them onto the surrounding bracing on the underside? Specifically on the NB hood that is... ;)

ThePass 08-14-2014 02:53 PM

Anyone is more than welcome to buy a set and explore alternative mounting methods, but these will come with a tried and true hardware method that won't have issues with heat and track abuse.

Good; I'm sure I still got some double-sided Scotch tape left over from when I installed my side skirts and canards... :naughty:

Does the 49% improvement apply to the NA or NB?

ThePass 08-15-2014 01:59 AM

They are within 2% of each other.

So I know I said we'd post the group buy tomorrow... but I figured you guys wouldn't mind if we did it ahead of schedule ;)

This is only the beginning. Group buy was to confirm that the interest was there. The plan was and is to do full production of these given that the group buy proved the demand was there. I'd say that's confirmed ;)

We're going to focus first and foremost on delivering to those on the group buy, but hot on the heels of that we'll be working out the details for full production.

Is it just me who doesn't like the half circle placement on the hood? Would be much better if the front of the cuts are in the same level.

vehicular 08-18-2014 10:00 AM

Air travels away from a point at the front of the car in a radial pattern due to the high pressure point at the very nose of the car, and the air traveling around the windshield. You're not dealing with a purely linear system like a 2D analysis of an airfoil here. You have to accommodate airflow in three dimensions.

If you string test your hood, you're going to see air moving in a pattern like the directions that the vents are oriented.

ThePass 08-18-2014 03:37 PM

^ What he said ;)

Because this:

my only complaint is that it's not big enough... make bigger..yes?

Will we be receiving a paypal request for the remainder of is owed? Or will we be emailed or pm'd?
I don't mean to bug if you haven't got there yet, just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

Those who have sent a deposit will be getting a follow up email later tonight about the remainder owed as well as an update on the group buy. :)

Awesome to see this come to light, but sucks we won't be able to get the great pricing since it sold out in hours :(

great idea for cooling, also looks "cool" too. anyone get engine temp readings with similar designs?

Sorry Pass.
I couldn't wait any longer and had to have a set made. Took a little freedom on the design. They may not flow as well as yours, but its done.

Dammit that looks nice... Props

Ask and you shall receive.

linkless 10-14-2014 09:41 PM

Mine are installed in my spare hood. If they are sufficient to keep the car cool enough on the track I will cut up the factory hood and post pics. I'll be painting the louvers with Duracoat which is very tough and easily applied with an airbrush. It's a firearms finish so it handles high temps and is impervious to most chemicals so it should be a good application for it.
