Well after a year of DMV BULLSHIT I finally have a clean title for this car. Let the building begin!

Got ahold of a 2000 short block. Some pistons and rods are on the near future list than machine shop. Glad to finally have a direction for this car. For a while there I thought I would have to just part it out.

I'm thinking.....EFR.....

So I decided to just build a piston/rod build a 2000 shortblock I have here an than I see on a local page a guy I know around here that has a 2004 Mazda speed has just got hit in the back and its totaled. Guess who bought the total.....this guy.

So now I have a 93K running mazdaspeed. Don't know much about these motors except they are non VVT on an 04?

So any benefits to building the 04 Mazdaspeed block or is the bottom end the same?

What head is it? 99-00?

Does it have setup for oil drainback and feed already?

To reroute or not to reroute?

Goals will be 300whp street car.

It has better cams. The head is a 99-00 head and besides the turbo plumbing the rest is pretty much the same. I would do the reroute but make sure to use the 94-97 head gasket.

Not sure if he took anything off, but here is the FS thread for that red MSM on CR.
ClubRoadster.net

Not much in performance upgrades listed but a few extras that might be nice.

I'd say keep it. That color looks fantastic, the interiors on them are nice, the extra bracing is neat, etc.

HOWEVER,

The wiring and ecu will most likely have to be swapped to make the 00 motor work on it.

So might not be worth the trouble.

Why so? It's pretty much got a 99-00 motor in it already.

I know it's got that transponder BS or whatever it is that makes my red "key" light flash at me all the time in mine, but i also don't know exactly how that stuff works.

[edit]

Sorry... just double-checked post date, my bad.

The MSM 6 speed is worth more than a normal 6 speed and the motor is basically a 99/00 but with a BP4W head and VTCS instead of VICS. The block has oil and coolant bungs for the turbo. The pan has a spot for an oil drain already and you can't beat the +5whp provided by the sexy oil cap. The red cam cover sucks for COP retrofits but the OEM half-COP setup isn't too bad for <15psi.

You have an embarrassment or riches going on - especially if you paid book for that wreck. I've done that and I generally feel like a dick charging anyone for a part off it considering it pretty much funded my whole build. :giggle:

The damage on the red MSM doesn't look like a total. Can you post more pics?

Crap. Nice snag on both of those. Sounds like you will have a full functioning MSM for cheap. Following this.

I have an MSM head in my 99, the coolant passages on the MSM head are the same as the VVT heads.

Also the bottom end has a mains support brace.

Kid had is slammed for years and the undercarriage shows it, I'm sure that was taken into account when it was totaled.

Oil drain back is in the pan or the block on the 1.6l? I got it for a good deal, considering all the parts there to sell. Is the 6-speed different than the "normal" AE and LS 6-speeds? Never heard that before. An the oil cap is baller!

So same passages as the VVT? So what HG? To reroute or not to reroute.

Oil drains are almost always in the pan. The MSM 6 speed have shot peened gears or so the legend goes. If you sell it, proudly advertise the MSM heritage and hold out for a good price with a comma in it.
