Oh My God I Just Bought A Tranny W/o Synchro

Oh my god, i just spent $300 including shipping for a JDM tranny with 40k on it, only to find out it doesnt have synchro..... I am not familiar with this... can i install synchro? its going to cost $100 to ship it back so this would cost me $400 and i would get $195 back. AHHHHH!! :bang::bang:HELP ME:bang::bang:

jayc72 03-08-2008 01:19 PM

Why in the name of god did you buy a "JDM" transmission (unless of course you are talking about a Japanese He-She)?

Anyway, what do you mean it doesn't have syncros?

1fastmiata 03-08-2008 01:28 PM

cheap! thats why i bought it, ebay. it is a japanesse tranny

i was pushing it through the gears the other day(not in the car) and it seemed really rough. i figured it was just because it hadnt been in a car in a while... thought nothing of it.. so i was just looking at the description of the auction and i realized it said nothing about synchro-mesh so i was like oh sh*t i have to ask... and the guy just wrote back saying no it doesnt and synchro is in the rear end... is it?

Trent 03-08-2008 01:35 PM

Did they even make a synchro-less miata transmission? I don't think so. There would be no point to that unless it was a dog-box.

stupid question. you do have transmission oil in it, right? Sometimes used tranny's come without being filled with oil to save on shipping weight.

1fastmiata 03-08-2008 01:45 PM

the guy stated in the email he just sent me tht it has no synchro.. i know that all miatas from the US have them, but i wasnt sure about japanesse. im pretty sure it has oil in it, he said to change the oil before installing it. its not in the car yet

Splitime 03-08-2008 01:50 PM

You have no idea what you are talking about. And it sounds like the seller is clueless also, unless he is just responding to how little you know

Do you have oil in the trans? Have you tried it in the car? (i know it isn't in... but trying it within its proper format of on the car and fresh fluid.... might help)

Syncros (plural) help mesh the gears during shifts. The transmission has them.
You talk about syncro-mesh, that is a type of trasmission fluid.

The rear end has NO syncros. NONE. It is a differential and does not do any SHIFTING.

i know the rear end has nothing to do with it. he is dumb.
im talking about synchros, he said it didnt have them, i wasnt sure because its imported from japan.
i believe there is oil in it. it is still wrapped up, only the shifter is protruding.
it has not been in the car. i got it last week, was waiting for my clutch. and no there is not any fresh fluid in it.

Sounds like you are the stupid one.

The trans is toast.

Edit: Or it could be simply fine, You haven't even tossed it in the car yet. 30k on it, hahaha. It could simply need new fluid. Syncromesh isn't needed unless your trans is grinding. There are syncro's in the transmission for sure.

Ben 03-08-2008 02:04 PM

Next time
  1. spend about $75 more and get a trans from a good source.
  2. don't buy anything listed as "JDM"

Don't assume. Drain & fill after installation.

Keep in mind the shifter housing is a separate reservior of oil.

gman3 03-08-2008 05:36 PM

Im thinking you might want to ask this at the "other web site" This is more typical of what people post over there

Doppelgänger 03-08-2008 05:40 PM

you're a fucking moron.

gsx1992 03-08-2008 05:54 PM

You're shifting it through the gears while it's on the floor, and you expect it to shift right into the gears smoothly? :bang: Synchros won't do a damn thing for you unless the shafts are spinning. Put the thing in the car, put new fluid in it. Drive it on.

JDM, yO:giggle:

samnavy 03-08-2008 06:10 PM

Are you fucking kidding me. The thing is sitting on the floor of your garage and you're complaining cause it won't go into gear? Are you high? Seriously, that's something a stoner would ask about.

And if your current tranny has lost Reverse and 3rd in just 54k, then it looks like it's time for an automatic. The tranny's are one of the more robust parts of the car and routinely go 300k+ miles with no problems.

bryantaylor 03-08-2008 06:22 PM

another dumb post from 1fastmiata
just ban him, please

Zabac 03-08-2008 06:31 PM

looks like you need some saving kid, listen closely and never forget this...

anything JDM means you are a flaming homo who likes it up the ass.
there is no difference between japanese and american engines and transmissions and rear ends...dont ever buy anything that says JDM anywhere in the add
sounds like the sellers is an absolute idiot, so dont listen to anything he says and just hope that you didnt buy a blown tranny
now, install tranny in your car and put fresh fluid in it, i think it takes just shy of two full quarts, but i dont remember to be exact...also take this opportunity to change the fluid in your "shifter" and in your rear end
again, JDM=your taking it in the ass
smarten up kid, you have lots of knowledgable members here to guide you, dont take that for granted and use your resources, ignorance is not a bad thing, stupidity is!
good luck, you need it

chriscar 03-08-2008 06:44 PM

Hey Fastmiata, didn't you say your father or uncle was a mechanic? Do you bother to run these questions past them before asking us?

+1 I abuse the shit out of my tranny and it's running fine at nearly 150K miles. learn to drive a stick or buy a fucking camry.
