How do you get that metal round piece (its referred to as Rear Cover Oil Seal in the shop manual I think)? I removed the 4 small screws on the top and the 2 long screws at the bottom but there does not seem to be any place to pry the cover off and its on there pretty tight so trying to pry as best I could try without damaging anything did not seem to budge it much. The engine is not out of the car just in case it matters; just the transmission, clutch/flywheel ...

For what it's worth (may help someone in the future), the Fel-Pro seal I got from Amazon for the NB2 was leaking. I had it in per specs, 0-0.5mm inside the outer edge. One other guy left a recent review that the seal was leaking for him but other older reviews were good so I bought it anyway thinking it may be a one off; but it does appear that there is some change in their manufacturing or maybe there is some slight difference in NA vs NB2. I got a genuine Mazda one from the dealer, oiled it and inserted it but it went in a bit further than I liked and I tried to pop it out but it just went in too far or about 3-4mm and its not possible to pop it back out by tapping on one side. So either I remove the cover and reseat the seal or scrap the seal & wait a couple of days for the seal to arrive from the Mazda dealer. I figured while I'm in there I may as well put new sealant just in case it was not the seal but the sealant that had cracked as I don't want to go through this once again.

In any case its not a huge problem if I can't get the cover off; just have to wait till next weekend to get time to work on it and put a new seal in.

I had to remove the half moon after pushing the rear main in too far. After removing the bolts, a few light taps with a mallet and the bracket just popped off for me.

I tried that. It just won't budge. That makes me think maybe its on quite tight and I ought to leave it alone.

I love how 5 years ago we were raping some kid for necroposting in a hardly 1 year old thread and that same thread gets a bump 5 years later.

Man, time flies.

Update: Got a new seal from Mazda. This one was a bit more work to get it on and took a bit more tapping, i.e. it was not going on so easy to get the last bit flush with the lip. No more leaks. If it went on a bit too easy, there is something wrong with the seal, is my conclusion.
