Default Paging all Garret Turbo owners-- sound from turbo at startup????

OK so I have a ball bearing Garrett GT3071. When I start the car after it's sat for a while, I hear a sort of grinding whirring for about 1 second after the car starts. I am pretty damn sure it comes from the turbo. Is that the sound of the bearings spinning before fresh, sweet, juicy oil reaches the CHRA?

Do you all hear this sound too? I don't remember hearing it for the first 15K of the turbo's life. I heard it before my engine build and now. It doesn't burn oil, it spools happily, shaft play seemed to be what it should be etc.

Ummm no, not the turbo. But check your oil level. I'v heard a similar noise a time or two when my oil has been low.

When mine cranks I can only hear torque and horsepower, but it may be different without v-bands.

That's just the sound of your turbo clearancing the frame rail a little more for you.

lol

Clip the microphone from your electronic det-can to your CHRA when you start it up. Oh, you don't have yours either? I swear I'm going to use mine for everything when it gets here.

Maybe this is the gods telling me I should upgrade to some badass tubular manifold and a gt35 equivalent with a non slip-joint downpipe?

How long had the car been sitting? After mine had sat a few months I had a similar whirring noise. I just made the same assumption you did re: oil.

Does it every single time it's sat for an hour or so.

Try this novel idea....

Have someone else start your car when it's cold witrh you standing over the engine and ready to listen.
