Default Pre 99 1.8 shortblock compatible with 99-00 shortblock

My 2000 miata motor is done, truthfully I have had enough with this motor problems and want to start with a new one. I got a rebuilt 99 head and have the opportunity to pick up a pre 99-00 1.8 shortblock. I will be replacing the pistons and bearings with OEM stuff and maybe the rods too but will be keeping the crank.

What are the differences in the block n crank? Should I order the 99-00 pistons to achieve the 9.5:1 the later motors have?

What other issues will I run into. Its going to be a daily driver so not looking for mega horsepower build.

Thanks.

Block and crank are the same, except the early 1.8 blocks have the oil feed port on the drivers side.

Yes, order the 99-00 pistons if you want 99-00 compression ratio.
