Rewiring power windows to always work

How do I make the power windows work even if the car is off?

Googling isnt turning up any positive results.

Oscar 01-10-2009 08:18 PM

make sure they have a constant +12v source instead of the switched one?

patsmx5 01-10-2009 08:20 PM

This is something I've ALWAYS wanted to do. AbeFM did it. Like Oscar said, find the wire that's switched 12V and run it to fused 12V that's always on.

y8s 01-10-2009 08:23 PM

if you pull the switch and probe the harness, you want to find the wire that is +12 when the car is on and not +12 when teh car is off. be sure it's not one of the window outputs, but I think those will always be unpowered unless you move the switch up or down.

18psi 01-10-2009 08:25 PM

question: why do you guys want to do that?

Braineack 01-10-2009 08:25 PM

Replace the relays while you are at it. Writeup on m.net, makes them work 1000% better/faster.

Thats what I would do if I was the first to do it, but if someone has already walked down this road why would I waste my time?

To learn something on your own so that you can think for yourself once in a while instead of blindly following others? ;)

Saml01 01-10-2009 08:41 PM

Not gonna get into it.

Anyone have a link?

Awesome. Thanks.

But my windows speed is fine.

I guess ill track down where the power windows power comes from and swap it to a constant 12 volt.

Its cool.

My drivers side window moves slower than mike's car. :giggle: I seriously gotta figure out what's wrong with it one day.

:hustler: Run a full time +12v lead to the current switched +12v lead. :bang:

IMO, a dumb ass idea in most cars, but probably not too much of an extra security risk in the miata so do if if you feel like it. My dad had a classic benz that had what appeared to be 5 power window switches on the driver's door. The 5th switch was actually a toggle that allowed any of the 4 window switches to function with the ignition off if the toggle was depressed with the window switch. Pretty neat.

I was thinking about this last night, but then why the need for the elaborate relays?

Braineack 01-11-2009 02:14 PM

Like I said and the link states, the relays provide more juice to the motors, making the windows work better x100. My last miata it took about 15 miutes for the window to raise back up on a well greased track.

I need to look at the madracki diagrams and see how the windows are wired into the car from the factory. My windows are fine, they go up and down pretty quickly. I'm mostly curious where their power originates so I can switch that to a constant 12 volt.

Braineack 01-12-2009 10:22 AM

if it's anything like the NA, it's directly powered form the ignition switch.

looks the same.
