may be makin two hundred plus horse but there is virtually no end to the potential if you can make it spin faster your goanna go faster the only thing keepin it from spinning itself apart is the trans

Wait a minute you aren't thinking this through. He had to have that car at like greater then 9000RPM to make that power. You need the miata to get to 6800 RPM to make the same and more power... Sure the rotary spins way higher, but that's because it has to to make power. Put a rev limiter on it to 6800 and it will be the slowest car on the road.

Just because something spins high doesn't mean it's better then something that does not. Crap a LS1 going up to 6000rpm would kill it.

this is true but you cant make a 1.6 spin up to 10,000rpm with out throwing a rod unless you do a hellacious build the rotary theres no end sure you have to make it spin fast to get it to do that but thats nothing for the rotary

I think there is a better chance of a turbo appearing on my car than a rotary engine appearing in anything you ever slap together.

The wankle is not an inherently high RPM engine, where in the **** did this idea come from. It may have been a pretty high reving engine in the 1960's.
It takes work to make it survive high rpms just like anything else, Im pretty sure the reason for so many blown up rotaries are because
1) People rev the ******* **** out of them
2) people dont tune them right (which is a death sentace due to their extremely low tolerance to detonation)

but anyway

Clearly a 2 rotor is going to make the same torque @ the same RPM as a piston engine.

I've seen cracked rotors and failed e-shafts. They do fail. "They can spin to infinity" gets on my nerves.

And I'm late to this gayfest.

AND, I can't tell if you guys are just giving the OP ****, or if you are retarded, but what is it with the talk about rotary engines needing to be revved to 11ty bizillion rpm's to make any power? They might be a little late, but they still make power in the "lower" range when turbocharged (under 5k). Yallz be hatin!

You walked headlong into that one. A 1.3 rotary has a swept volume of 1308cc, but its effective volume is 2616cc because it combusts fuel every time a seal passes a port - there is no dedicated exhaust "stroke" per say. This is why ALMS classes Rotarys based on 2x their displacement. It's got a 4-stroke style cycle, but it makes power like a 2-stroke.

Also, each rotor in a 13B motor displaces 654cc (IIRC) - this would make a 3-rotor motor a 1962cc motor, which is a 2.0.

Want to know why we're bagging on rotarys? They suck. Rx7 guys with half a brain on them know this, which is why they dump them and drop LS1s into their cars too. The 13B doesn't do ANYTHING well - it doesn't make good low-end torque, it doesn't turbocharge reliably, it isn't reliable, it isn't light, and it isn't easy to put into the car. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to put a 13B into a Miata unless you just want the fabrication exercise. Trying to argue that the 13B is in some way better than an LS1 swap or even turboing the BP motor that's already in the car is foolish.
