rx7 rearend question

Default rx7 rearend question

ok well i went to my local junk yard to get a 1.8 rearend swap well the miata was striped already. but i saw a bunch of 7s . so what all can i use from the seven? for 206 i can get the dif axles and drive shaft. what else will i need to make it work? also how can i tell what rx7 has a lsd and which are open?????

you can use the whole assembly but itl take alot of fab work. The lsd swaps on a 1.8. as farr as knowing the difference pop the pumpkin open.

just grab the VIN and call the dealer, but all GXL and TII models had the LSD, the GTU models did as well I believe but are rare to find.

all the rx7s in there were gxl
but what will work in the swap to my 1.6? will it all bolt up? if i pull the rx7 third member axles and drive shaft will it all bolt up???? or will only certain parts work?

all were GXL's? ok. you would need a 1.8 rear diff housing and axles I believe. or you might be able to just swap out the upper diff bushings from your 1.6 rear. try a search on it, there are many threads on here and m.net

i tried and couldnt find a definate answer. i currently have a blown pinion gear in my 1.6 vlsd and just need to know what i need to swap it out.

1.8 driveshaft, 1.8 halfshafts, 1.8 rear-end assembly.

want the rx7 lsd, open the diff and drop the unit in....supossely.

or you can do the TII rear (8") which requires a lot of effort.

well, might have a Torsen type II for sale very soon, but probably over your budget. unless you have a red hardtop to trade, lol.

You can use the rx7 housing (swap bushings from miata housing), stub shafts if using 2piece miata axles(kinda rare) and the lsd unit, thats it for the basic swap.

So don't take the axles driveshaft or thrid memeber (take out lsd unit) rest is junk.

You need miata third memeber (b/c of ppf mounts and short pinion) then u need miata axles(kinda hard to find) and a 94+ driveshaft(everywhere for 50bux)

Turbo II's have 8'' rears and are vlsd

The Turbo II's, like the naturally-aspirated RX-7s, came with both clutch-type ('86-'88) and viscous ('89-'91).

Just get a miata thrid member with an open diff, then slap the ring gear from it onto the rx7 lsd and into the third member. I'd use one piece miata axles if I were u (thats what I used, i have an rx7 lsd) Then get the miata driveshaft. Then use the rx7 housing and press out the bushings and transfer in the miata ones and thats about it. Aside form tsetting backlas h and jazz

Magna, he was probably like, "Hmmm...should I get one of those rear-ends for him? I don't know....oh wait, what's this? He'll PAY ME for one of them! Well, hot-damn, I'm totally doing it!!"

BTW, if you're going to make him go through the trouble of pulling a second RX-7 rear-end for you, you'd better pay him a bonus for removing it: they're a ******* pain in the *** to get out of the RX-7. Much more labor-intensive than the Miata.

Last rx7 rear I pulled I charged the guy $150 for removal in addition to what he was paying for the part. It is not an easy task at all.
