6-speed with 3.6 rear end but that doesn't matter. The senders in the transmission are obviously different, but the speedo always expects 4800 pulses per mile.

that's what I am trying to understand, the sensor in the transmission has to be matched to the differential ratio to produce the 4800 ppm. a different ratio needs a different sensor

yes, that's correct. The sender must be choosen so that it produces 4800ppm for the rearend you have.
