sr20det in a mx5?
anybody have any info on this. i have been searching and i would really like to do a swap like this. any input ??:)

I don't have any info nor have I seen one. I do know that the sr20det redtops make what 220 HP stock? You could do that with a 1.8 miata engine pretty easily and you wouldn't be dealing with all the problems that come with the motorswap. Heck if 1badmx5 can make over 500hp on his 1.8 i'm pretty sure you could build a 1.8 that is satisfactorily power happy.
But if you're stuck on the motorswap, I'd be excited to see how you go about it. Though i'm more than happy enough with my bored over 1.8. Could be an interesting thread. |

That guy says he's putting one in, he already has the vinyls on his car, so maybe it's done already. He might have info on how to do it though. |
Two of them were documented start-to-finish on the M.net engine conversions forums. Probably about a year ago. Both done in Florida. I think one was in some fast and furious rag not long after.

Bottom line, for the cost you can get the same results out of a BP. Plus the SR20DET is slightly too tall to clear the hood, so I guess it gives you a reason to have a hood prop kit. :)

If i was going to swap something into a miata (which I wouldn't), it would be something a little more capable than an SR20. You could have WAY more power putting the money you'd be spending on the SR swap into the BP.

to put in an sr couldnt you just make two mounts and get a driveshaft made and put in a megasquirt?

Well, you'd need motor mounts, some sort of tranny mount or you could attempt to adapt the PPF, custom driveshaft, custom oilpan, custom radiator/coolant hoses, custom intake tract, custom charge piping/intercooler setup, possibly take out some hood ribbing/bracing, etc.

What's cheap- not much money? Just curious. It just seems that if a mazda motor could do the same, then the extra work would be worth it, unless one wanted to be unique or just had a fascination/passion for the Sr20det. Are there really sr20dets running 400+hp on stock internals?
There's no doubt the sr20 is a sweet engine- it's never been anything but quick in every car it showed up in. I loved my buddy's SEr sentra- and an NX2000 just won the ARRC in ITA- car was a rocket! |

clear up the confuison i didnt put a sr in a miata,i have the same pictures as getsidewaysd1.i was thinking about putting a sr in the miata because my cheap miata had 200,000 miles and was a smoker.so i was going to have to put in a different motor.but put back in a a bp because it makes a good boosted motor.sr also have a alumionum block and i ive barely seen them go past 400hp built.

the nice parts of the sr is you wouldnt have to worry about blowing a tranny,leave the stock boost and fuel youll be around 240hp and im pretty sure its lighter.

Yeah, SR20's are great... if they came in your car. Otherwise don't bother. You could have a 400hp BP with the money you spent on swapping a 200hp SR in.

I think when talking big 4 cylinder swaps, we're talking about guys who are doing the fabrication themselves. So the expense really comes down to the engine and supplies. My guess is the goal with these swaps is one or a combination of the following: do something unique, get a stronger engine w/o the FM price tag, build a mega powerful engine (something that require displacement beyond the physical parameters of the smaller motor). Though I'm not sure how credible the last is now that we've seen an FM stroker do 600+hp and 500hp on a daily driver. - rob
