I would love an FE3 miata though :)

Sr is too tall to fit without a lot of custom work. If you want to do a swap 1/2jz or 7m are very good motors and are easier to swap into a miata than sr. I think inline turbo 6's are the best engines, torgue and making tons of power, that's what I would do if I were doing a swap. Dont forget thought that you'll need to swap a rear end to handle all that power and have correct final drive so there more to it and comes out to some very high $$$ amounts

any proof that a 2jz would fit though????? I would think that it would be too long....

RusMan 11-20-2006 08:23 PM

1jz fits, so 2jz should be fine too

1JZ in a Miata
Definitely much larger in scope- especially when you have your ports swap sides. The FE-DOHC swap is by far the easiest swap I've seen (except for the 1.6 to 1.8). Add an F2T crank ($25), 87mm Wiseco pistons ($500) and you have 2.3 liters.

FE? You have caught my interest.

FE as in FE-DOHC (commonly referred to as FE3 because of the casting on the cylinder head). Mazda's F series of engines are the "big block" 4 cylinders.
Lots of info here.

I wonder how boost friendly the FE is compaired the BP... :)

turbopezz 11-20-2006 11:54 PM

do you feel a difference with the fe.

getsidewaysd1 11-21-2006 12:04 AM

Thats bad ass. If I only had the money............

m2cupcar 11-21-2006 08:55 AM

Based on existing swaps, the FE3 loves boost like the BP. The car had a sc'd 1.6 before, so yeah it's a little quicker. ;) Hope to do some more tuning/sorting over the holiday. FE3s sell for no more than $800 (plus freight). The intake manifold is a 1.6 top welded to an FE3 bottom. That's about $200 of fabrication. I did the rest using my scrap metal and parts pile. It's less about money and more about time.

my friend made over 300 hp on miata with the first known FE3 swap and he had a bad headgasket, and exhaust flange at the time.

And that was on his first lowboost completely untuned dyno

Last I heard that FE3 Miata was making 530atw and the owner was aiming for 600.
