The blade sensor that fed the gauge cluster is no longer with my engine (2002 1.8 with M-Tuned reroute in a 1990 body), how do I get the stock gauge to work again?

What temps sensor are you using right now for the MS?

 

Using the 1990 two hole adapter to get my ECU temp. It's just not showing up on my gauge cluster, so I assume the blade must be what feeds the cluster.

Did u use like 30 gaskets and plastic screws so you lost your ground?

try grounding the adapter

 

Well the 90-93 harness has provisions for two temp sensors..one for ECU and one for the cluster. Duh..we all know this. The 1-wire sensor needs to be properly grounded and is the cluster sensor. I ran into a similar issue when I did my reroute with the 1.8L temp. sensor. It's a 3-wire for two circuits. One circuit has two wires and is for the ECU to rear and the single wire is for the cluster...this signal requires the sensor to be properly grounded and in my case the sensor was on a spacer that wasn't making ground with the head and causing the cluster to not read. Was fixed by grounding the spacer to the head with a piece of wire.

 

Do you still have the sensor in the back of the head that the blade hooks onto?

As long as the sensor is screwed in properly and the blade connected the temp gauge in the cluster should work. It is very easy to break the little blade and then cause your temp gauge not to work. Ask me how I know that.

 

I don't think I have anything for the blade to plug onto, actually.

well the blade that extends out is on the sensor, then you connect onto that...

are you suggesting you broke off the blade, or you cant find the plug?

Or is it that the '02 motor did not have a separate sensor for the cluster? Then buy one and do like dopplebanger said.

 

99+ motors do not have that sensor. They have a hole still in the head that is tapped, it just has a plug in it. Basically you use a hex bit to pull out the plug and screw in the sensor from your 1.6. I will try to get a picture tonight if I go over to my friends house that has a VVT motor hanging on a hoist currently.

 

I get it now. You have the single wire that *should* have been hooked up to the cluster gauge but now with the 02 engine, you have a wire but no sensor. I don't know why I was confused baout that.

What you need to do is (assuming you have the 3-wire temp sensor on the 02 engine) is to figure out which is the wire for the cluster and run your single wire into that wire coming from the sensor.


I'm guessing the plug that shu is talking about is the one under the corner of the head...under where the coilpack would be bolted in this picture..

 

That is a picture of the back of my VVT head. Right around 8oclock there is a little blade for the sensor. Nagase used the temp sensor from her 1.6 block so she does not have the 3 wires. so she well need to undo the little plug and put in her sensor from her old engine.

 

Yup..that. Maybe the obvious solution wasn't so obvious to me either lol

 

Lars, is that dash temp sensor located on the BLOCK or SPACER?

 

It is located in the Block. I will try to get a picture either tonight or tomorrow of the actual spot. Depending on when I go over to my friends house to finish his motor swap.
