I like simple sheetmetal heatshields surrounding the sensitive bits. A little airgap goes a long way. Add sticky-back gold foil stuff to them too.

I've had GREAT luck with my solution. I bought the following kit for around $36:
Click Here I didn't install it as pictured. The kit comes with an inner 2000° coated fiberglass sheet (perhaps 12"X18"), then it also comes with a large (maybe 18"x36") 1000° outer fiberglass sheet with a foil layer. I wrapped the turbo in the inner coated fiberglass layer folded in half for double thickness. I then used the fiberglass/foil piece is doubled and used for the liner of my heat shield. http://alexroy.net/miata/P6186133.JPG It's easy to remove to get to the turbo if I need. I just used some left over diamond plate scrap, a MIG to weld the shield, and some pop-rivets to attach the fiberglass to the shield. |

There's a reason nasa uses it on junk floating in space. for now though, the shiny aluminum tape will do almost as well. much cheaper at homedeep too. |
Yeah, blanket's going bye bye today. Gotta finish the damn undertray project and see if I can get better airflow through the engine bay.

wouldn't the greater surface area and thinner material of the downpipe and manifold make more sense to try to trap in the heat than the thicker metal and relatively small area of the turbo?
