Just purchased a 2004 NB that was turbocharged 2 years ago.
The person who did it was immaculate in the installation.
Sold it 8 months ago to another person who for whatever reason decided to replace the oil restrictor on the T28 turbocharger recently.
I suspect he starved the turbocharger.
I picked it up for a song since he needed money for another build.
Car was driven to my house (8 miles).
Before ending up in my driveway I was told that the turbo will pull properly until it gets hot - and then power drops to nothing.
I am a newbie with turbocharging.
Interested in why it would work until it was hot - as opposed to not working at all.

Have you actually tested this power goes to nothing yourself? What actually happens when this power goes to nothing? Is turbo no spinning?

FYI: Update

Starved of oil, turbocharger wastegate casting developed cracks.

When cold - cracks did not cause any issues.
When hot - cracks opened up bypassing wastegate - no longer had boost.

Solution: Replace turbocharger with new unit.

You couldn't just replace the turbine housing?

If it’s a generic T28, why bother housing swapping when new they are so inexpensive

If it's a Chinese copy sure, but I see no mention of that. When I see a T28 mentioned I assume genuine Garrett from an S-chassis. I also assumed Garrett because they were notorious for this failure.

A new Garrett is not inexpensive.

thats fair, I assumed the opposite -- no say Garrett, not Garrett.

Its all water under the fridge anyways
