turbo porting!

does anyone port their turbos here? i have a pea shooter 13g. did a google search and looks like DSM guys port the **** out of the hot side. i need to do something, car is too slow
but it looks like people port the inlet, and around the wastegate, and leave the cold side untouched. so does/has any here port their turbos? was it worth it? port anything else?
also i have read about people not running a gasket between the mani and turbo, what do you guys do, just smear on a little RTV just in case?

RTV will burn out. With fresh milled surfaces you don't need anything.
Some people are porting out their turbos. Mainly the wastegate port. You can port other parts for some flow gains. Not sure how much of a benefit you will see, a nice smoothing of the casting would be nice though.
Porting the WG port will help with overboost.

The gasket thing between mani and turbo is a DSM thing as far as I know. No type of sealant is going to take the heat of the turbine housing. I've never noticed any leaking on either of my turbos.
As for porting, I think it would just be easier to pick up a different turbo. You can find stock 14g's and 15g's for dirt cheap. I'd think a port job is something you'd want professsionally done. I'm guessing about $50 for quality work? I also don't think porting of the housing affects max airflow output. If it's for spool improvement that's one thing... but if you're already running out of efficiency then a new turbo is what you want. Wastegate porting just affects boost control, which isn't your problem.
How much boost are you running? IAT temps? You've got plenty of fuel with 460's... I'd think a 13g would support at least 200whp... how much do you want?

yeah i have the 16g and wish i would have gotten the 14b looking back now, there are plenty for under 100 bucks, but i'm sure i'll love my 16g when it on the car

looks like i (should) get way better spol up. about a 1/3 of the inlet was blocking the outlet on the mani/gasket. and the wastegate flapper was pushed up, so there was a small gap on the bottom of it, i knocked it back down into place, and started porting today, just need to get some more bits now, i dont have anything strong enough

It's made for the job. Hell I've used it on scored/uneven flanges, and even used it to rejuvinate a leaking head to manifold gasket in an emergency with great effect.
If the bigger turbo is $100, it hardly seems worth the time to port if the benefit won't come close to upgrading to the 14b.
If both surfaces are flat, you shouldn't need a gasket. I don't have one on my t3 and ss tubular manifold and no leaks.

I didn't say it was a permanent solution on that particular gasket, but it did work for long enough to get the job done. Also just because the EGT's may hit 1500 doesn't mean the head or the entire manifold reaches 1500.

i have a gasket anyway, just wondering, lol. and any 14b's here that are not blown, are no where close to $100. i will just upgrade to a 16g later on, but i have a great condition turbo right now, so i will continue to use it.
the job is to maintain a seal between the turbo and manifold...this job should never be "done"....it WILL burn out. the end.
I'm sans gasket because the metal composite gasket I installed (designed for the job supposedly) came apart and started leaking. Both flanges showed flat with a machinist's edge, so I bolted them up and haven't had a problem since.
Sure, on a line enough time line any type of seal short of a stainless weld you could use will fail.
But depending on what "the job" is. If you only need it to hold that seal for a day it is a option that worked for me, and suprisingly held for alot longer than I thought it would. When I've used it at the turbo to manifold and turbo to downpipe flange it's held a better seal than factory gaskets, and better than no gasket. But that's been my experience and you don't have to believe anything I type if you don't want.
