Default Weird idle problem.....

Ok, i just moved to viginia beach for school and had to drive the 240 and leave the miata back home....BECAUSE....for the first few minutes each time i start the car it like to die. I crank the car, it turns on, idles for a second then cuts off.....the only way to get her to start again is to get on and off the gas while i turn the key..otherwise it just turns over but never starts.....if i start her up and drive right away, it does the first thing at the first stop i come to, and i have to start it the same way......any ideas?

It might be the kill switch in the AFM. Could be that it is cutting off the fuel pump on very low airflow. Jump FP and Gnd in the diagnostic box, then start it.

If it starts and idles OK, check to see if there is an air leak that would let unmetered air enter the engine without going through the AFM and then that the door in the AFM is moving freely. If you have turned the AFM so that the weight of the door can hold it closed, this can also cause the problem.

If the above jumping doesn't help, look next at your air valve on top of the intake manifold.

yeah I agree, sounds like a vacuum leak or a problem with the AFM.

My connector is fairly sensitive and a few times the same thing would occur. I would crank it, it would catch, and die unless I gave it some gas. Tinkered my the connector (cleaned it) and no more problems.
