Hey all,

I've been contemplating coming down to the states and picking u pa Miata for quite sometime. Miata's are a fair bit cheaper in the states even after factoring in duties and taxes. However, I think I've found a sale going on near me. The owner is moving and is selling his house and car(s). This 99 miata with 113k km is being sold for: $8000 CDN. Approximately 60k miles.

http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ354119427

He is the second owner out of two and has never winter driven the car. The owner also says that the PO has garaged the vehicle BUT just told me that there was rust when he purchased the car last year. He had the rust drilled out and now there is purportedly no rust. I do believe him that he doesn't drive it in the winter and if it has ever seen the winter, it barely has. Anyways, the lowest he will accept is $7.5k. Let me know what you guys think. He's telling me this is the sports package with Bilsten shocks.. I don't think it is- looks like standard LS with leather package.

Going to see it and maybe put a deposit on it this afternoon.

BTW: Miata prices in Ontario are maybe 30-50% more expensive than in NY, PA and NJ.

That is too much. Keep waiting and saving. You can be sure that if there was rust that was "fixed" at some point its gonna be somewhere else too. It doesn't really matter that the second owner never took it out in the winter if the first did on the regular. Rust is like a rash, once you have the rash it will try to take over even if the cause has been removed.

There are soo many Miata out roaming the roads. You're sure to find one that you like without paying so much. Maybe they pull more money up north, but down here that car would go for 6-7 tops.

6-7 tops with a hard top? The problem is that I can't import a nice find like this unless its a 97 without paying up to 1-2k in taxes. So in the end I think this is a justified deal.. 7.5 right now. I'll see what he says..

Thanks for the advice though, really appreciate it.

Just do a bit of research on the most common places for rust. Then be sure to check every nook, corner, hidden spot for rust. I just hate it when someone buys a car and gets the rust holes.

Rust is a killer man, even if it's been fixed. I found a southern 2000 with no rust here in NY and paid 4600 for it. Gotta keep your eyes open. I'll even browse CL for you quick. I'd pass on that though.

http://syracuse.craigslist.org/cto/2775288583.html Way clean plus a six speed. It isn't cheap but no rust and there are receipts for everything.

http://nwct.craigslist.org/cto/2798997316.html Super cheap, rust free. Rear end damage. I've never had the back of my car apart to know what it's supposed to look like so I don't know how extensive the damage is though. Someone else can chime in on that.

Not much for sale this time of year it seems. You're really looking at a bad time. The prices will all be high in the spring.

If I'm importing a vehicle from the states that isnt 15 years or older I'm looking at paying 2k in taxes. Considering that and the fact that almost EVERY owner states that cars that are taken care of are rust free, it's not worth me buying a car in the states. I rather travel an hour in Ontario to see a car that doesn't impress me than spend a weekend and find out the owner exaggerated a bit. Also, I think you guys are overlooking the mileage.. It has 113k KM= 65k miles.

Anyways, the going is 7.5 and I'll see If I can get it down more.

My car is rust free. Seems like you've already made up your mind though. Go for it.

Go for it. I say that simply because I'm tired of you continuously starting threads with "what do you think of this car?!"

Why do you start a thread asking for advice and then ignore it all? That car is too expensive and has too many problems.

Have fun with your rust bucket.

first the 2000 LS will have Bilstens [yellow shocks] and the faceplate on the door jam will indicate sport suspension
it will also be a torsen differential

second, purchased my 2000 LS with 42,000 miles for $4800 plus $500 for matching HT with defrost

that is way too much for a rust bucket with that many miles

Then be tempted by this....as it comes with a 6-spd...and you know a few things about transmission problems.
