what problems does your car have at the moment?

This car really pisses me off sometimes.....

- Returning 250km a tank from mostly unboosted driving but stop start short journeys in the winter to and from work at the moment Have had 380km form a tank in the summer with allot of boosted motorway driving.

- IAC valve sticking....high RPM even when warmed up then just drops to 850rpm all of a sudden

- small oil leak somewhere

- Turbo oil return line leaking. Tightened jubile clips. still leaking. Third time Ihave replaced it now.

How about you guys?

Atlanta93LE 12-13-2006 07:02 AM

Odd thing is, most of my car problems are with parts not even on the car yet!

VRTSid 12-13-2006 07:15 AM

not being turbo yet.

Braineack 12-13-2006 09:00 AM

- Bad Oil Consumption
1qt every 750-1000 miles. Burning oil smell. No visable leaks.
Either: Oil Drainage problem, Rings, or Valve Guide Seals
I'll be tinkering with the oil plumbing this weekend, I hope it's just the heavy rotation of my CHRA.
- Flywheel Chatter
9Lbs Lightened flywheel chatters like a diesel truck idling.
- Exhaust Rattle
Exhaust rattles on something just as a engage the clutch in 1st gear. Haven't been able to find the source.
- Pierburg Pump Whine
Too loud, need to replace or move it.
- 1.6 Rear
You are the weakest link.

Ben 12-13-2006 09:01 AM

other than a *little* leak at the oil return line that doesn't drip any oil, no problems. Mine idles a little lean compared to others, but I don't see it as a problem.

<edit> the oem clutch is starting to get unhappy at 9psi.

m2cupcar 12-13-2006 09:12 AM

Leaking oil pan because I used a gasket rather than RTV only. Fragged clutch disk- new unit sitting on office floor. EBC isn't work, just haven't had time to trouble shoot. That's about it. Not bad considering the scope of the project.

I have successfully stopped leaks at the heater core connection by double clamping- maybe try that. - rob

Mimime 12-13-2006 09:17 AM

Clutch hydralic lever squirls when no pressure is applied.

- A thick coat of Luberiated Gelly between the lever and push rod, really did the job. But I have to lub it every oil change.

Al Hounos 12-13-2006 09:22 AM

clutch rattle, sounds like my pilot bearing is already shot. probably my fault. that's it though.

SamS 12-13-2006 09:25 AM

My downpipe rattles against a little cross brace under the transmission at certain rpm's.

Stock clutch doesn't like boost.

My I/C is on my workbench at home instead of in my bumper.

My stock injectors are too small.

And the biggest problem....

I'm a poor college student.

sbrian2 12-13-2006 09:25 AM

Too many new parts, not enough time to install them. :(

hehe...

I'm N/A...got some heatshield rattling...chattering/shuddering clutch issues...and my fucking instrument hood is cracked ( I think someone hit it when my top was down in a parking lot or something) so it rattles at 2, 4.5, and 6k RPMS.

Also, top squeaks/rattles at the joints

I was ignoring squeaks/rattles as "problems." I define a problem as something that can be fixed ;)

My turbo is leaking oil out of the seals after a professional on warranty rebuild. POS!!!!!

too much oil pressure, or bad drain, or bad pcv valve, then.

I have to agree- given I'm driving a 90 with 150k and with several previous owners, of which all seemed to have wrecked the car.

ColoradoSpringsMiata 12-13-2006 10:07 AM

-Lots of different whining noises, and i have no clue where they are coming from. could be belts. but sometimes the whining noise sounds like its coming from some metalic surfaces rubbing really fast or something

-DAMN SPEEDO CABLE!! has been making that rubbing/whining sound for like a year now, i really need to buy one and replace it.

-hard to get into 2nd gear when cold

- running pig rich

- hood latch rattles sometimes

- STILL N/A

- low funds

y8s 12-13-2006 10:07 AM

problems:
- idle droop
- hard shifting (need a bleed or slave)
- no traction in rain. a stock car shouldn't break em loose in 2nd just by flooring it. damn azenis.
- mildly munched front bumper / paint chips

other stuff I wanna do:
- re-seal diff housing. I think it leaks. spendy kaaz brand oil!!
- put my turbo back in. with the new IC. and tweak some of the exhaust parts.
- set up water injection. it's been along for the ride for over a year. dur.
- fine-tune my stereo crossover/eq.

- get my DC inspection and registration taken care of. ha ha ha.

TurboTim 12-13-2006 10:08 AM

Just this morning: I forgot to tighten a coolant hose clamp when I changed my coolant over the weekend. I figured this out 1/2 way to work. I could not reach the clamp with the tools I have in my car. Messy.

My intercooler pipe rattles on my fender from time to time.

There's a squeek in my trunk caused by the lid's torsion springs.

I don't make enough power.

Splitime 12-13-2006 10:52 AM

Being an a bunch of different part piles in my friends warehouse...

F20turbo 12-13-2006 11:10 AM

Tach does wierd shit, speedo shakes. Thats honestly it.

Haha not yet, maybe after christmas shopping though.

olderguy 12-13-2006 11:12 AM

Not wrong now, but for the past week it bugged me, so;

I just finished pulling out my CD player because when my wife changed CD's, it wouldn't start the new one. Found the CD behind the radio; she had missed the CD slot and it slid between the CD player and climate control.:vash:

I stuffed in some of the beading you use for window screens, to stop it from happening again.:x:

rotaryjunky 12-13-2006 11:27 AM

Snow/crappy weather.

Two kids to ride with me to work next year.

Other than that, squeaky clutch petal and a rattling pilot bearing (?) when the clutch is disengaged in neutral.

bad water pump causing coolant to pee from the front of the car, should be taken care of by this week.

Other than that... its just too slow ;)

samnavy 12-13-2006 12:23 PM

WOW, I'm glad I'm not the only one:
1. Burning oil/oil smell/occasional slight smoke. Less now that I'm running a 1/8 rivet restrictor.
2. Slight rattle somewhere under the instrument cluster started after clutch change... heat shield or something.
3. Running stupid pig-shit rich. Stinks like gasoline. AFPR set to max rise to be safe until I can get it on the dyno.
4. 200 miles left to break in the clutch.
5. Bad bucking at freeway speeds due to VTA and no 02clamp (install clamp and recirc this weekend).
6. Stupid NEWBS won't fill out their profiles or their sigs and then ask all sorts of in depth questions and don't even tell us what kind of car they've got. I don't know which smiley to use now... this:crx: ... or this:bigtu:

Pitlab77 12-13-2006 12:24 PM

Trying to decide if it should wear 615's or 710's at the next autox :bigtu:

:gay:

bripab007 12-13-2006 01:21 PM

Flywheel chatter (lightened stock 1.8L flywheel).

Differential whine after doing the RX-7 diff. swap because (I think) I swapped in the wrong bearings...that's what happens when you have four different diffs. laying around the garage and you take a month to do the swap.

Intercooler pipes need to be re-done...or at least I need to do a quick-fix on one that's close to rubbing the alternator belt and another that's rubbing a radiator fan shround.

Got some exhaust leaks...at the head-to-manifold and downpipe-to-catback.

Need new tires...the 195/50-15 T1-S are spinning like a mutha in 1st and 2nd gears.

Uh...that's about it. Basically, I've just been trying to ignore it and drive the shit outta it :D

Oh yeah, and the tach and speedo do weird things, too :)

Snowsurfer03 12-13-2006 01:50 PM

Actually nothing at the moment!!!

I just need an oil dipstick cuz mine is completely melted off! Anyone got one???

In need of some new paint maby in the spring?

Oh yeah and another 100WHP would be nice :bigtu:

I'd put money on the backlash and preload adjustments. while it wont hurt anything, it might make you nuts.

It's entirely possible, as it was my first time doing it, but I'm pretty dang sure I got them within spec.

Yeah, I figure I'll just drive it and not worry until the sound gets worse ;)

Easy choice, 710s. :bigtu:

LunaticDriver 12-13-2006 03:12 PM

1) Stupid turbo came fuxed from the factory
2) no car for 3 months so far and prolly another month or two till they get me my new one
3) poor college student

getsidewaysd1 12-13-2006 06:31 PM

I think it would be easier if I listed the things that werent wrong with my car
1.) Its ahhhhh.........got a............nice.......tires
2.) The ahhhh.......................wheels are good
3.)............................................... ...................

No really, everything on my car has gone to shit. Mostly, I just need a new motor.

cjernigan 12-13-2006 06:34 PM

Broke ass passenger side foglight. The whole back cracked right off when I was trying to change the bulb out. Got a used assembly, still have to install it.

Racer46 12-13-2006 06:39 PM

OIL EVERYWHERE UNDER THE HOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think the front seal is bad. Will check as soon as I can get some time off.

kotomile 12-13-2006 06:41 PM

- Melted rear bumper from muffler delete gone wrong

- until today, turbo was a little loose on the manifold, fixed.

- still haven't installed various go-fast goodies because no dyno in the area and weak 1.6 rear.

- Miata constantly burdened with the weight of LBV, Kevlar helmet, body armor etc.

tabs604 12-13-2006 07:02 PM

after hearing all your problems, I no longer feel alone and feel much better...lol!!

hustler 12-13-2006 07:15 PM

lack of forced induction

passenger window is slow with new regulators. I fucked something up.

iluvtruenos 12-13-2006 07:25 PM

I get a masssive woody every time I sit in it.

Fucks with my shifting cause I don't know which stick to grab.

left field 12-13-2006 07:31 PM

nothing was wong with miata until i decided to go FI, now its up on jackstands under construction. atleast i'm making headway

Fireindc 12-13-2006 07:52 PM

Hmm i have a few.

-Interesting chatter when accelerating slowly through first and second gears.(Sounds fine when i floor it, so thats what i do)

-PAINT!, was going to paint it- but must boooooost......

-Im either parinoid or my stock clutch is sucking, drop the clutch at 5k rpms and it just slips(is this normal for a stock clutch)? I guess ill find out if its really slipping once i boost later this month =).

-This ones funny, drivers side window regulator is all fucked, so now i have "manual" windows rofl, i pull it up with my hands to get it up, and push it down to get it down.

-My mom drove my car and broke the inside door handle, its all ghetto now =(. (this was one week after she broke my power window, she doesnt drive my car anymore).

-MINOR oil leak on the CAS i think, we have replaced the seal 3 times, which fixes it for 10k miles or so. I have no idea why this keeps happening, bad luck mabye?

-Of course hard 1-2 shift, syncros are off or something.. major click when its forced in, or i can slowly push it in smoothly- this really doesnt bother me.

-AND.. of course the dreaded rattles everywhere, again i really dont care since i know its not mechanical.

I remind you this is all on a car with 175k miles, but the engine is sound as ever since it was rebuild 8k miles ago =).

Any opinions to fix any of that is appreciated! =)

magnamx-5 12-13-2006 08:41 PM

no motor or tranny installed :(

turbopezz 12-13-2006 09:26 PM

exhaust leak.the turbo to downpipe gasket dont work right.so when i swap it thats a good reason to make a full 3 inch exhaust.

steering wheel is like a dirtbike throttle.

BrokeEnthusiast 12-13-2006 09:26 PM

well when it was turbo:
1) need money to buy drivetrain upgrades so I could up the boost

now
1) Its not sold yet :)

johnxsi 12-14-2006 02:07 AM

This thread's inspired me! I've been putting up with so many little problems with the car that they were starting to wear me down...but seeing that everyone else has a stack of issues too I don't feel so bad.

Right! I'm off to fix my popups once and for all.

akaryrye 12-14-2006 02:55 AM

on my 97 I have the

usual squeeks and rattles.
5th gear synchro is basically out
clutch is gonna be needed eventually
needs drivers side fender and headlight lids replaced and painted
the shocks are a bit worn and its annoying hitting the bumpstops.
fuel gauge is not working

These are all pretty minor and mechanically the car runs very well and the one that bugs me the most is the shocks.

y8s 12-14-2006 10:06 AM

i know this is a crazy suggestion....

but write everything wrong down on a list. then every time you have a spare hour or two, try to knock a few things off the list. once the small problems are gone, you'll only have a couple things left to do.

Andy mine does weird shit too, mostly my tach it jump around sometimes, is that what your does?

other than the fact that since i've painted the car i haven't gotten around to finishing sanding and polishing, and that i haven't put back all the fasteners for for the f/r bumbers and tailights(causing rattles) it's been fine. The exhaust is a bit loud for my tastes, but the car takes a beating and seems to like it now that i've replaced the clutch. but it does only have 42K on it so that might help

SkiZero 12-14-2006 11:51 PM

It's stock.

Ben 12-15-2006 01:28 AM

It's always something

Put about 100 miles on the car this evening. That's the longest single drive I've done in over a month. The car is sooo much more fun at 9 psi (185rwhp) than it was at 7 (165rwhp).

Anyway, when it got dark & I had to activate the pizzaboxes, I got a belt squeal when starting in first, and also when downshifting to 2 or 3. Not that r&r of an alternator belt is difficult, it's just *another* thing to have to do.

RusMan 12-15-2006 01:55 AM

1. Small oil return leak
2. No bumper, headlight, bent fender :(
3. High idle, just lazy to adjust it
4. Dirty engine bay?

I guess I don't have that many problems on my car, which is good.

m2cupcar 12-15-2006 09:16 AM

:werd: sage advice. I knocked out a bunch of stuff by spending 3/4 of my lunch hour on the car whenever I could. This really helped with wiring stuff- list is mandatory.

Mine started doing that a while ago, it eventually led to a terrible rattling sound due to two of the four crank pulley bolts being sheared off. Took all of Thanksgiving weekend to figure out what it was.

tabs604 01-03-2007 08:27 AM

my car really sucks at the mo:

has hesitation and is missing
overfuelling
o2 sensor died today as it is not oscilating on my guage anymore.

:vash: :vash: :vash:

m2cupcar 01-03-2007 08:55 AM

everything on your list is most likely related- solve one and the others will probably go away (tho you may need a new O2 sensor)

steelrat 01-03-2007 09:23 AM

It's pretty straight forward actually.... low boost tuning issue... I need to adjust the maps again I think for this colder weather.... (but at least we haven't had any snow yet... and well there's been no reason to salt either)....

A few misc. rattles....

Weird idle dip issue, where it will just go to crap after sitting at a light for 30 secs or so... (I need to re-adjust the idle)....

No IC... need to work on that project....

Otherwise, it's all good.... Still get the grin factor from the "boost" though. <G>
