it would be cool and if and/or when i have a kid of my own i would kinda want to be the same way, but if he's looking to build a drift car, make him learn about it, you don't have to bother doing research.

With him being 16 and just getting his license maybe he should be concerned about not getting into a normal accident aka rear ending someone. Teach him how to drive and shift, and whatnot before jumping head on into drifting, which is NOT a good idea, probably one of the most $$$ motorsports.

As for the parent and not a friend thing, out your foot down and be like hey you're not doing this etc....

geez...for sure.

Braineack 05-07-2008 04:09 PM

besides. ITBs are better for drifting.

Braineack 05-07-2008 04:10 PM

whoops correction ITRBs

Zabac 05-07-2008 04:14 PM

I thought it was IRTB's? Who cares, both are badass!
Again Jr., save your kid from humiliation, teach his the proper straight line (pun intended). He will get picked on in school and life in general.

Who was it that said, "Drifting a Miata is like doing gay porn and saying you're straight."

Braineack 05-07-2008 04:21 PM

the R stands for Racing.

It's like throwing a GT-R emblem on my car.

miataspeed1point6 05-07-2008 04:22 PM

I love how those drifter guys in that video had full racing suits, but no helmets. I would be more afraid of clipping the grass and rolling over than it catching on fire.

Have you seen that video where the kid is running down a canyon in his Miata "drifting", then slams into the wall? Go with something cheaper, Miatas become very expensive very quickly.

Hahaha you are in the wrong place for that. 99% of newbies get flamed on their first post. It happens every day.

Wait a sec...

You want your son to have an e30.

It sounds to me like you're willing to pay for said e30.

And your son does not wish to have this e30? He'd rather drive the official car of NAMBLA?

Have you ever discussed with your son the confusing feelings that I assume he gets when he looks at the other boys in school?

Stein 05-07-2008 04:27 PM

Nice thread title change. That will get you some love here.

No safety concerns there, the suits are really just because of the sponsors, they have to promote the sale of stickers you know :giggle:

we're going to start running out of miatas soon.

m2cupcar 05-07-2008 04:36 PM

I can't imagine jrkoupe hasn't already considered the possibility of crashing. And if he's building the car, I'm sure he's prepared to be fixing it. I'd buy the cheapest NA (90-95) Miata you can find that's a good candidate. Then start shopping for turbo parts.

Stealth97 05-07-2008 04:36 PM

best year to wreck is 06+. it makes them look better.

y8s 05-07-2008 04:48 PM

e30 has more steering angle potential. tighter turning radius than a miata.

Saml01 05-07-2008 04:52 PM

As much as I want to race and auto-x, and I probably will in the future I would not let my 16 year old son do it. At least not until he is passed the age where he still thinks like a child, that he is immune to everything and nothing can go wrong.

I cant tell you how to raise your son, but I would say no if I was in your shoes. Especially because youre footing the bill. He wants to drift tell him to go find a job, learn some responsibilities and pay for it himself or at least tell him you will match whatever he invests, if you cant talk him out of it. Then you will truly see how badly he will wants to do this when he thinks long an hard how quickly and easily his hard earned money will turn into a steaming pile of iron with one mistake.

levnubhin 05-07-2008 05:16 PM

He's 16 and you want to put him in a 2200lb turbo car? How about starting with something a little easier to handle. Not that Miatas are monsters or anything but he should atleast get some experience in driving first. I would never give my car to a 16 year old and my car is no where near the fastest car on here.
