what part about pro-tech performance is not understood? and if that's jon's car (m.net link hence the screen name) he bought everything at cost since he owns a shop. and yes it's located in austin. and yes that ecu is really expensive. ($2,000+) and yes their dyno is in-house. they're known more fore their supra and rotary expertise, but work on and build whatever they want. my buddy had a motor built for his 750whp civic by them. they also used to employ a tuner that travels worldwide to tune monster supra's. (jason nenni)

and yes, modern ignitions are capable of lighting a spark in extreme conditions. my friends 750whp civic had a completely stock ignition and never had a single problem. as a matter of fact he had a msd ignition when it made 500whp and had problems. the tuner ripped the msd stuff out, put used oem parts back in and all was good. you just have to run the right spark plugs and gap.

how the hell should i know? i don't have a drag miata!
i can tell you that on my vr4 i run 7 heat range ngk's with a 0.026'' gap on 26psi and 100 octane. running a 60trim t3/t4 turbo.

my buddy runs 8 heat range ngk's on his dsm gapped at 0.022'' gap at 30psi on his precision turbo t4 60-1 and a 75shot of nitrous.

and lastly the civic runs ngk racing 9 (that's the part # !) or racing 10 plugs
you don't set the gap on those, if you saw what they looked like you'd know why. that's on a precision pt76 turbo at 25-35psi depending on track conditions.

btw, the dsm's are both stock blocks (pistons, rods, everything)
both of us have built heads though (ti. retainers, valve springs, webb or crower cams, my head is ported, my buddy has a magnus intake mani. and both redline @ 8500rpm) civic is a fully built block/head of course.

and all of those cars are on stock ignitions. although the dsm's do have spark plug wires, the 750whp civic doesn't even have that. stock plug wires!

Hmm okie but I've still read several high hp miata owners stating that they had spark blow out.

Alsoooo just because the uber tuner went to stock ignition doesn't mean that it's better- that just might mean he didn't know how to set up the MSDs.

If it makes you feel better, you can pay for my dyno session so I can try to see how much boost I can run on the 01+ coils. Maybe 99 ignition is super special.

omg, stop it. point is, modern vehicles have very capable ignition systems.

your statement about setting up the msd on a civic is dumb. but you don't know anything about honda ignitions so it's not really your fault. "setting up" a msd coil on a honda (they still have distributors by the way) invloves connecting a pos. and neg. wire to a coil. (singular)

the ubertuner is just that. he's been tuning since 1996 in houston. look up "stoopified" or "stoopid tuned" he's worked on everything from 500whp single cam civics to pro outlaw twin turbo 2500hp mustangs. he's not some backyard tuner with a dell.

they had spark blowout? did they even gap their plugs? doubt it. if you buy stock plugs and leave the stock gap on a turbo car, guess what will happen? does that mean you need an ignition?

The car is very real and the guy isn't an idiot. I've known him since I moved to Austin in 1996 and we were both in 8th grade. When we hit 16 we constantly went to Protech Performance and hung out there even though the only thing we could afford at the time was an Iceman Intake. He stuck with it and got a job there. The miata was crazy fast and really whipped your head back. Never raced for money, most "abusive" action it saw was on the dyno. I don't know much about cars other than the basics but I do know he didn't abuse it.

Tell your buddy he should part out and make much more money.

To help him out I will buy:

his transmission
turbo and manifold and downipe and exhaust.

Then you're stupid, considering how well everything is sorted. If it still had the origional tranny, internals and such then that would be justified then...

I just bought this car. I guess we'll find out whether it is worth the money or not. Of course, I bought it for only 8k and we are putting ZXTex's 2871, larger radiator/fans and Enthuza exhaust on it. We'll keep you updated as we progress. I also bought a wilwood brake setup from him for a ridiculously low price...I'll post more when I know more on the specifics.

FYI the 01+ coils can handle up to 28psi of boost just fine.

Well, it actually came with a set of LS1 coils. I'll have to set them up, but they are very nicely mounted with a custom cnc'd mount.

Good news. That is what I thought.

Whose car was that 28lsi with? How much whp did they end up with? And were they running water/meth injection?

Off and on...I need to either find or build a roll bar for it. I am also still trying to get my spec miata finished (this purchase will definitely not speed that process up).
