Savington, Did you ever end up putting in a session or two of driving on these studs? If we order now will it still be the 60 days or so until we get them?
I will probably end up sending you money in about 2 weeks. I have to wait tell my next paycheck for some more cash. |
In and payment sent...
Let me know when they're shippped so I can look for them. Thanks! |

I was never able to, but Sonny's been having the same problems for about a year now. His car is comparable in speed to my car before the v-band kit. I'm confident in his ability to put a sufficiently abusive test through the studs.
Edit. Has he done any track days since then? I am just curious about longevity of them. I will assume if he does more on them you will re measure them correct? |
No, no track days since the testing on the 10th and 11th. I wish it were possible. ;) I will have him do a few more track days on them and then remove them for inspection/measurement. My biggest worry is the condition of the threads inside the manifold - orion4096's car was set up with Resbond and copper lockers and the mild studs didn't deform, but they eventually just disintegrated and blew out of the manifold.
|
Good deal on these... If I wasn't going V-band I would be all over this. Thanks for making this happen for a reasonable price Sav.

In edition to the double header at MRLS, I went two days later to a kart track and abused it on that tight but fast track, much like a faster version of an auto-x, which I would chalk up as about a half track day equivalently. |
Subscribed- need to see something about my setup before sending payment.
|
Just sent you money Sav. People need to step up and get these ordered.
|
Paypal sent

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...yweather-1.gif no but seriously, I'll put them into production if I can get 10 people. I have to buy a lot of these to get them down to a reasonable price. |
Come on guys it has been a month now. I really don't want my money back.

Not much to see, they just look like normal studs, except you can't buy them in singles for less than about $60 each. |
I dropped my block off at the machine shop last night. That means I have just a few weeks until I am ready for my build. Which means I need more cheap guys to get in on this group buy so that I can have my studs for my build.
|
Hopefully I can PP cash on the 21st. I don't even have the turbo yet, but this is a good deal if it happens. I've just held off so as to not tie up cash.
|
I want to get these made as much as you guys do. I'll see if I can float the money. If I can, I'm going to close this early and I will charge more than I was originally expecting to to make up the difference, probably ~150-160. If you're on the fence, get off of it.
|
I am ok with paying a little extra to make sure that these get made.
|
You'll have ducats from me by tomorrow night.
|
So how are we doing with this? I sent money a couple weeks ago and I'm not on the list in the first post, hopefully there are others not listed also.
|
I am in for two sets shipped together if these get made and shipped within a very reasonable time. I am very bad at waiting.

What do you consider a reasonable time? I think Savington will go as soon as he gets enough orders. With your 2 orders should put us up around 9 orders. Which means it might happen very soon, hopefully.
Sav, once you start the project, what is the turnaround time before it's shipped? |

Once I place the order, I should have product at my door in 4 weeks. If I can get a bunch of orders this week, we can all expect parts July 1st. |

If you didn't give a screen name in your paypal or it wasn't obvious, you are probably one of the anonymous buyers.

Can you post the exact specs in terms of thread pitch, overall length, threaded distance, etc? I will get some ordinary steel studs in the same dimensions and tap the manifold accordingly. |

If you're doing an interim steel stud, you want something with an overall length of approximately 40mm. |
You've got cash.

I'll edit the OP with this info, but I am going to move forward with this buy. I will extend group buy pricing to the first 12 orders (6 are spoken for) and only if you place the order before May 31st. Once I place the order (probably early next week) I will have a firmer date as far as shipping goes, but don't expect to have anything in your hands before early July.
|
Savington FTW!
|
I'm surprised how few people are in on this group buy.
Savingaids, You may want to advertise on the Mini boards too because the R56 Mini suffers from this problem and they frequently melt plastic valve covers from it too, lol. |
What's the latest update on his guys?
I'm very for this GB, even though it seems that will take more time that what I thought... What's the ECD on this? |

Hey guys do you know for which inconel alloy we are talking about?
600, 601, 617, 625, 718, X-750, or Inconoly 800 series (800 through 825)? |
I sure do, but I'm not going to kiss and tell. For the amount of time, money and aggravation I have into the R&D on these, the alloy will remain a secret.

It's not that this is a new alloy that you created or something for god shake... I can tell you that the best for the application would be the 718 (which is also used in aerospace applications) and 751 which is more rare to find. Since the prices and the properties between the inconel alloys varies I want to make sure what we are getting here... For anyone interested here are the datasheets for the 718 and 751 http://www.specialmetals.com/documen...lloy%20718.pdf http://www.specialmetals.com/documen...lloy%20751.pdf |
Max,
It is Sav's and other vendors' prerogative to keep certain info a trade secret. Lots of vendors do this. I can imagine that they did have to spend a bunch of money and time to figure out a solution, and wouldn't want other vendors to easily get that info they worked for and just undercut their prices because they didn't spend the initial R&D money. If you feel that strongly about it, then don't buy his product. You are free to not buy the product and go spend time to figure this stuff out yourself. The rest of us will each make our own decisions whether or not we are willing to part with X dollars for Y product given that Z info was withheld from us. I'm not trying to be an ass, but that's reality. Sav et al are spending extra time and money to come up with a real product that they can stand behind. That's a bit more involved than one of us just posting information such as "hey I've used this at work for holding ICBM's together at re-entry and it will probably work for us turbo weenies". Cheers. |

Hey guys, I'm really not sure what is going on here...
I'm just asking a simple question - as if the exhaust that you are selling is made out of T-304 or T-400 and the answer is that I can not tell you because I spent too much $$$ in R&D. What R&D? The properties of these materials are well known so there is no reason for somebody (who doesn't create a new material) to spend anything for R&D. Jason- you mentioned that "come up with a real product that they can stand behind. " What do you mean by that? There is no warranty of any kind implied in the description so what does that means? |
It may seem like a simple question, but consider this: What if NOBODY had figured out the correct material to make the exhaust out of in a Miata? What if the materials used in other cars weren't cutting it? What if mild and stainless steels just melted away? The material properties are well known, sure, but what properties are the ones we need? Nobody can concretely answer that question - the ONLY way to ensure that you've made the right material selection is to order in a small (read: expensive) quantity, put them into cars, and get them tested. I've spent the money to have prototypes made, and I've spent money and time testing the studs and having other qualified people test the studs.
I'm not going to put a product on sale that I can't stand behind as a fully vetted item, but at the same time I will take steps in order to protect the financial investment I've made, as well as the time I've invested into that vetting process. I'm not sure what else I can say here - the alloy I use works, and I've proven it works, but I'm not going to divulge which alloy that is. |

Confirmed today, these are 100% for sure getting made. Tenative ship date is July 15th, 2010. I was able to get the threads rolled vs. cut as well, which is sweet.
$105 shipped GB price extends through Monday evening of next week, then the price will jump considerably. If you want them cheap, get in on it now. |
Nice, the money is in your account for TWO sets.
|
The edit window on the OP has expired but we have 9 orders, only 3 more slots at the $105 price.
|
In for a set. Sending money now.
|
TEN, we're good to go Sav! You go girl!
|
This group buy has expired. If you got in before the date, congrats, you saved a whole pile of money and helped bring a much-needed product to the community. Expect your parts in early July.
For the rest of you, these are now available for preorder for $159 + shipping. |
Hooray!

If they are delayed, what's a good source for 10mm studs I can get quickly for temp install? Just so I can get everything in place...probably won't drive it until these arrive. |
I was expecting them last week, apparently there was a little bit of retooling needed which delayed things slightly. They are scheduled to leave the manufacturer by the end of the week, which means I should have them Monday.
No hard shipping date until I have them in my hands, though. |
All group buy orders shipped out via USPS today. These kits are now IN STOCK for $159.

Drilled and tapped my manifold, drilled the flange on the T25, and got the studs in today... very nice pieces Andrew.
Attachment 195575 BTW, no probs with the hardware fitting on my T25, just need to have enough brains to start the nuts on when the turbo isn't all the way down the studs. |
Awesome. It had me a little scared. The first batch of Stage 8s we got were 17mm wrench heads, obviously no way those were going to fit. I called Stage 8 to get the 14mms I'd gotten in the past and they said they don't make them anymore due to a supplier change. Glad to hear the 15mm heads work out.

Im not near the car in any way at this moment and I need to time-sert my manifold. Which end of the stud goed into the manifold (long or short) and how long is that end?
