There is no link.

Look around. There are deals out there, everywhere.

Example: Brothers co-worker recently decided he wanted an AR15. Sold everything firearm related he owned to buy one, spent $875 on a used rifle w/Colt M16A2 upper and Bushmaster lower receiver. Had a few extra upgrades, some new parts, sling, really nice hard case, 2 magazines. Selling his Rem 30-06 to my brother for $200.00, he then invested in a very nice sling, some optics, and a bipod.

Six months later the co-worker decided he wanted his Rem back, so he traded my brother straight up for it.

Just curious, what field are you in? I don't know many PhDs that make over $100k, unless your tenured or a super professor of some sort.

You can make $100k outside of academics. Once he's got his doctorate, perhaps he's talking about working in private industry.

You aren't eligible for a TSP if you aren't a federal employee, so you'll have to look at a Roth 401k. Not sure how the initial funding and limits work on those.

Start a Roth IRA and max that ($5K for 2010). Heck, invest some in an index fund and then use 20% to buy a rental property while you're away. Get a nice long 30 year term at <5% and have your tenants pay the mortgage for you. You can buy your CDs when inflation hits and rates are double digits. That <%5 mortgage will be free money for you as long as you don't spend it on bullshit.

I was encouraged to go on and become a professor by several of my professors. Their argument being in this part of Canada they scoop up natives (in the sense I was born here not in another country) and having a commerce Phd makes you ~$250k/yr in the business focused universities of Ontario. Regular non-business focused universities are more like $100-150k.

I too would like to be a professor after a few years of work but I decided the $60-100k for 2 years was too much for my masters at this time and joined Canada's largest bank. Further down the line, ~5-10 years assuming I play nice, they will pay for my masters and pay me at the same time!

Saint foo: In India, software engineering Phd's make ~$30k/yr writing the latest version of windows.

You can pretty much make as much money as you want if you have the motivation to do what you need to do to get there. Degree or not.

Kind of offtopic here; Forgive my ignorance about Canada, is a really large portion of the Canadian population migrants from another part of the world? Any specific demographic greater than the other in this sense?

You're right about software development in India which is why so many of the big companies over here farm out millions of jobs to India. That 30k/yr software engineer would cost 130k+/yr here. From what I know about India that 30k isn't a bad job for them however. Average yearly income I've found online for India is $500.00 a year? That sounds.. uhm.. wrong?

****, maybe I should go get a job in India.. lol.

I find it funny how so many threads here, turn into gun discussions.

I'd spend it to have Van Halen play at my next birthday party.

CDs are low risk, but also low yield, even if you go long. No expertise required beyond understanding what their yield rate is.
