Here's my understanding of absinthe...
There's the real stuff, which you can only get in france, or whatever country it is that it's produced in, and contains drugs that are illegal in the US.
Then there's the stuff you can get in every other country in the world, including the US...which is nothing more than alcohol.

We never can really get the good stuff anymore:
M80s? Illegal in most states.
High octane, leaded fuel? Rare.
Modern automatic weapons? Not since 1984.
Beautiful, virginal girls who like hairy chests and monster trucks? :(

I could have sworn that Lucid was one of many who figured out a way to keep the Thujone out of the final product. Thus why its now being sold in the US... I had thought it was still illegal in its psychoactive drug element was still illegal.
Without that... its just crappy high grain alcohol.
Yup... its lame, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_(Absinthe) Of course whoever wrote the Lucid absinthe page (probably a Lucid employee) says Thujone was debunked as being anything significant.

Edit: And I found something with science in it:http://www.thujone.info/thujone-absinthe-39.html
And here is the review from THE absinthe forum:http://www.feeverte.net/guide/countr...he_superieure/

Here's my understanding. People lied about what it did to you in order to make it illegal (always follow the money). Since you "can't get it" people pay big bucks for it and think it is cool. It is kind of like a Cuban cigar. I've had many Cubans and I would put my $0.50 JR specials (flavored by me of course) up against a $20 Cuban. They just don't live up to the expectation.
FWIW, I had it in my mind several years ago that I wanted to get a bottle of absinthe. I did some reading up on it and everyone said it wasn't worth the $80 I was going to spend so I aborted mission...

... traditional way with the chilled water dripping upon a sugar cube in the middle of a slotted spoon. It louched from a transparent greenish color to a cloudy white.
It tastes very strongly of anise seed which tastes like licorice. It is very bitter and it's bitterness is only slightly disguised by the addition of the sugar. It is not a pleasant drink, IMO. It really has no redeeming qualities that I can find.
