Thoughts on this technology?

 

I wrote about that idea for one of my college application essays. I always thought the amount of air needed was far larger than the size of a reasonable tank.

 

It will break, and be a pain in the ***.

Worst bit of engineering i've seen in a while. This bracket is supposed to be held on by mushrooming that bit of aluminum sticking through. But there is no way to support the other side because there is a connector in the way. And it doesn't sit well in a vice. And you can't fit a hammer in that cut out area.

This is a prop valve for a jeep wrangler.

 

Open vice, put connector between jaws, use a drift and hammer to mushroom aluminum.

 

Whats a drift?

It kept moving in the vice, and i didn't want to clamp it any harder. Stupid $100 part.

I used a hose clamp

 

Use a block of steel to make up the difference in height. whats the problem?

$600 diode failure which ended up smoking the other 2 on it's bank.

This failure also smoked 2 SCR's and 4 fuses before it kicked the 1200a breaker. uggh.

 

Can it be fused better? Breakers are too slow to save silicon in my experience.

 

yeah, it uses fast acting fuses. Sometimes they don't always work.

 

 

So are fuses. A silicon part will usually sacrifice itself to protect the fuse which is protecting it.

When you're designing a big, expensive system that has the potential to fail catastrophically on things like overcurrent or overvoltage, you have to take extreme measures to protect it. An active protection circuit will monitor things like load current and source voltage, and forcefully disconnect the supply (and maybe even crowbar across it) if an out-of-tolerance situation occurs.


One of the boards which used to cause me frequent grief at PR&E was a big audio DSP board which had several expensive FPGAs on it. We designed the overvoltage-protection circuit to close a sacrificial SCR between the +48 supply and GND in the event that the 1.8v or 3.3v lines went above spec. It caused the SCR to explode when it tripped, but it saved the big, pricey gate arrays.

 

option one: zip ties in x pattern

option two: drill some holes and screw it on

option three: learn what a drift is

 

1. I'll add more zipties for good measure.

2. Not exactly sure of the anatomy of the part underneath, don't want to ruin the $150 part.

3. Turns out I actually have a drift punch for my air hammer. Probably would have worked.
