I've occasionally gotten random one day delivery. Not same day.

What's particularly interesting, to me at least, is that yesterday evening I happened to walk past a Google Express van.

(not my photo, but similar.)

Now, this was Google Express, not Amazon Express, of course. And I thought to myself "Huh, I didn't even know that existed." And having done 15 seconds of research, I'm still not certain what Google Express does, precisely.

But still, we seem to be approaching the Instant Gratification Event Horizon.

It just depends where the fulfillment center is in relation to you. We have a huge amazon warehouse here in phoenix, and ill get stuff same day when it comes from that warehouse.

I find this in common with a lot of Google projects and I almost feel like they do this on purpose. If you don't "get it" then you are not the target audience and probably not the type of people they want to deal with anyway. If you do get it you are probably sufficiently intelligent/informed to make the decision yourself and not become a support nightmare.

For this reason, when dumb people ask me what kind of phone to buy I tell them to buy an iPhone. Not because they are superior, but because of the walled garden approach to development that apple uses its really hard for dumb people to **** them up.

(Some smart people use iPhones too, don't get your panties in a twist)

I don't know where the nearest center is, but this particular alternator belt was shipped from Belleville, NJ, which is over 10 miles from here; two islands away. (Well, one island and one extremely oddly-shaped peninsula.)

Also, please bear in mind during the course of discussion regarding multimodal freight transport that this is the random pictures thread.

Having now done a few minutes' research into Google Express, I conclude that they are a grocery delivery service.

I must say, this is one of the relatively few instances in which I've looked at Google's implementation of X, and said to myself "Wow, that's a really horrible, substandard implementation of X, as compared to what Amazon is doing."

Some people juggle geese.

I'm dumb bought my 1st iPhone (6) about 6 months ago lulz

but seriously, I hate them with a passion, and yet when it came time to replace my dying semi-dumb phone and my criteria was something compact, sturdy built, and did I mention compact? the only option in the android market that was even somewhat decent was the sony xperia compact.

I'm getting used to it, but still loathe the fact that I'm using a fapple product

Google Express and Amazon Fresh can suck it. I work for the largest grower/shipper of fresh veg in the state* and neither will return our phone calls.

* depending on the metric used of course.

I've perused the Amazon Fresh site, attempting to determine whether it would be of any benefit to me. I've found the following:

1: The website is extremely well-designed and easy to navigate, in both desktop and mobile forms.

2: The annual membership fee, while high, is not outrageous.

3: The selection and pricing of the merchandise, while "ok", does not justify the membership fee. Most of what I need can be found at shops I walk past each day in my normal commute. Most of the rest can be handled by riding out to the Target in Harlem once or twice a month.

4:

Personally, I could never use a shopping service for any fresh food items. I am far too picky about choosing just the right one, so the thought of leaving the choice to some minimum wage earner on a ridiculously rushed schedule just kills it for me.

I certainly wouldn't use any such service for fresh fruits and vegetables. I walk past a dozen street vendors every day who offer reasonable quality produce for good prices right there on the sidewalk. Just don't disturb them during prayer time.

(I'm not being racist, my avocado guy literally has a prayer mat in his cart, and uses it at the appointed times.)

No, my interest is quite utilitarian. In order to partially defray the cost of my extravagant metropolitan lifestyle, and afford me more time to reflect upon life and all of its many inadequacies and disappointments, I tend to take my lunch each day in my luxuriously-appointed corner office, in the form of a frozen, pre-prepared entree. And in particular, I find meals produced by Amy's Kitchen, Kashi and Saffron Road to be highly palatable and nutritious.

The impetus of my investigation, therefore, was little more than to determine whether I can procure said provisions at a lower cost than that which I pay at the local Fairway Market or Gristedes. And the answer seems to have been "No, not after you factor in the various membership costs and / or delivery fees associated with said services, to say nothing of the diminished variety available for your selction."

Which is interesting, given that online delivery businesses have, for the most part, tended to be highly preferable to local shopped in these regards.
