So, my employer has a multitude of handicap spots throughout the campus, and at any time we have probably a dozen or two associates who are legally able to park in handicapped spots. However, as a hospital we also have a large percentage of the people visiting us as legally handicapped.
Legally we cannot tell our associates who are handicapped where to park, but they tend to all park in ONE parking lot generally designated for patients and visitors, forcing the handicapped visitors to either hope a semi-close parking spot opens up in the visitor lot or park in the handicapped parking in the employee parking garage. To complicate matters, these people are taking up a handicap spot for eight plus hours during the busiest business hours.
I realize we could just add more handicap spots, but since handicap spots are now basically double spots, in order to have enough spots for both our associates and our patients/visitors who are also handicapped, we would be taking up nearly half the main visitor lot. Another solution would be to make the main visitor lot a double decker but the city says that would be an eyesore...
I don't know the solution that is fair, but it's frustrating and I feel bad for our visitors.

Pretty much where I am at. But there is no reason I can't rant on here. Honestly I am not bothered so much that they park in places other than the employee lot. There are a dozen or so parking lots distributed throughout the campus, and most of the employees could just as easily park in the spot NEXT to the handicap spot that is open the hours that they arrive to work and it wouldn't eat up handicap spots. I am just a low level guy in the facilities department and there are about a dozen people above my pay grade that are paid to make decisions like that.

My take on this is, how handicapped does one have to be to be considered "acceptable" to park in a handicapped spot?
My father was diagnosed with MS when I was 13. I'm 35 now, and he drove a handicapped van a few years ago with a wheel chair ramp. The last 22 years were a slow downward spiral of loss of muscle function. In other words, he's pretty much paralyzed from the waist down.
In my eyes, this is acceptable for handicap useage. Last Monday I flipped my dirtbike over and went to stand up, and my right knee went towards my left knee. I'm on crutches now for a bit with a fractured tibia. This still does not (in my eyes) render me the right to use a handicapped parking spot. Hell, I'd rather use the stairs with crutches just because I live life with the theory, "if I am fortunate enough to have these extremities, and am functional...why should I not cease the opportunity?"
If you are physically capable of doing something, do it. There are more people out there than you could imagine that wish they had the opportunity that you have.

I thought I tore my ACL, but I actually fractured my tibia right where my ACL mounts to it. I'll be back in the game hopefully in like 3 weeks.
