There was an incident a few years ago in which a C-17, which is rather larger than a -130, was accidentally landed on a 3,400 foot runway at a small general aviation airport in Tampa, rather than its home base at MacDill.

Getting the airplane out of said airport again was an interesting process. They pushed it back to the extreme edge of the pavement, off-loaded everything that wasn't bolted down (including most of the fuel), and did what can only be described as one of the most impressive drag-launches in the history of internal combustion.

This newscast shows aerial footage of that plane and you can see the rubber marks where the pilot was standing on the brakes, lol.

It's pretty funny he mistook at 3500ft municipal runway lined with residential homes for a huge 11,000+ ft runway.

Does anyone know what happened to said pilot? Serious razzing from peers? Drummed out of military? Demoted? Now flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong? Most of the above?

There was a lot of debate & speculation on both the military and GA forums, but so far as I know, the identities of the flight crew were never disclosed, nor was much made in the way of official statements aside from the rather obvious confirmation that the incident was the result of "fatigue and human error."

My father-in-law is ex Air Force, Vietnam era. He flew cargo planes. I have talked with him before about the demands of a military career, compared to civilian life. Typically a mistake of this nature is a one and done scenario. It doesn't end your career immediately, but your chances of advancement to the next promotion level are greatly diminished.

I could be completely wrong, of course. But my brother-in-law is currently in the navy officer corps, and is at 18 years, and the differentiation between you and the other guy for promotion gets razor razor thin at these levels. That kind of mistake, imo, is a long-term career-ender.

My ex gf once rear ended me. I had borrowed my dad's car an she was driving her dads car. Both of us were coming home from work. We did not enjoy the consequent phonecalls and then the endless teasing from our families :P
